My dad (now estranged, I wonder why /sarcasm) and older brother were having a conversation that I wasn't really paying attention to, but I heard my dad say the G-slur (we're not Romani) and when I told him that its a anti-Romani slur and he shouldn't be saying it, he responded with (paraphrasing), "I know, I mean, THEY say its a slur, but I don't think it is, and they don't really exist anymore, so it doesn't matter either way."

The r-slur has been used to dehumanize intellectually disabled people and severely developmentally disabled people for decades. For you to ignore that, is just you wallowing in your own ignorance. No, dumbass. But it's not medically directed towards autistic people and therefore not autistics to claim. Nonqueer people can get called things like faggot, dyke, and tranny. That does not mean they can reclaim those slurs.

i really don't know. it's uncomfortable. they've always said it since they were younger. they used to say "i didn't know it was bad to say" and now that they use it so casually there's no excuse.
i've heard people (fashion designers specifically) refer to hijabs as "head dresses" and i've never heard hijabis correct them, or seem uncomfortable, but i thought that the term seemed incorrect or a little too casual? what's your thoughts on the usage of "head-dress" interchangably with "hijab"?
i haven’t heard that being used before , personally , and i usually associate the word “head-dress” with other cultures and the adornments they use in their rituals and ceremonies. however , i don’t see why it’d be offensive or weird to call it that , so long as the context of its usage isn’t inappropriate. what you SHOULD NOT call a hijab/niqab is : a rag ( re: the slur raghead ) , a towel ( re: the slur towelhead ) , or a burqa ( not the same thing AT ALL point blank period this shit really gmt because y’all think burqa is an umbrella term for our dress when so many of us actively reject burqas and the enforcement of them in terrorist - controlled areas ). on the funnier end , they’re not allah hats or islam caps LMAO and i personally don’t find it funny when people call a hijabi they don’t agree with a ‘hoejabi’ because it’s disrespectful to pervert an honorable word like that. appropriate words would be headscarf , hijab / niqab / turban based on the particular style of the wearer , or just calling it a religious covering in general. head - dress doesn’t seem so fitting , but i wouldn’t see why anyone would take offense to it ! hope i clarified things !
Found out I'm part Romani because i told my aunt that our cousin should rename her cat (the cat's name is g*psie), and said "it's okay because we are part Romani!"
This... Might be Antiziganism? Sometimes people claim to have Romani ancestry or be Roma because of a distant relative. Other times it's just a fact about the family that isn't brought up much.
