Happy 2nd anniversary to the perfect Pokeani couple <3
Everybody knows the age old “a good children’s show should still be enjoyable for adults” argument and while I obviously agree, I think there’s a deeper aspect to it that a lot of adults are ignorant to that makes them sound really entitled while discussing children’s media, namely the actual child’s perspective. While kids’ shows shouldn’t disrespect the intelligence of their adult viewers, respecting them also shouldn’t come at the expense of the kids themselves, you shouldn’t produce material that the target audience wouldn’t care for just to earn the approval of the adults. I don’t just mean stuff that’s inappropriate for kids such as violence or bad language, but things they would dislike or find boring as well (in extensive amounts at least, subtle nods that only adults would get in jokes for example is fine). Showing such material might not be a huge sin or anything, especially if the point is to give them something a little more unconventional, but the ABSENCE of it certainly isn’t a sin either. This thought was sparked by Kukui’s and Burnet’s wedding in the latest Pokemon episode. A lot of people have harped on the show for giving their relationship such rushed development, I had some criticisms in mind as well until I actually watched the episode and realized that the point was just to tell a fun wedding story from the perspective of the children around the couple, not the couple themselves (though we did see the proposal, but even that was just there to do the “I choose you” and “ring in a Pokeball” joke) which makes total sense because that’s what the target audience can relate to, they wouldn’t want to see extensive romantic development between two adults, what matters to them are the key developments, the moments that actually effect their lives and that they can react to. Kukui and Burnet getting married isn’t what’s most important here, a new person moving into Ash’s house and his and his classmate’s teacher getting married is. If we actually focused completely on Kukui and Burnet and the circumstances around their marriage were played out completely straight and realistc, I’d agree it would’ve been lazy and bad writing, but that wasn’t the case, there was a lot of creativity and love behind the episode, and I’m glad we got to see a wedding in Pokemon style. Always keep the children’s perspective in mind while attempting to critique stories meant for them, don’t be entitled, be an adult.
Proposal and wedding time!
I FORGOT BEBENOM APPEARS BRIEFLY AT THE END OF AETHER ARC I'M CRYING HARD NOW NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
...Now I’m even more emotional. Reading twitter at the same time as I watch this to see quick translations, and this companion section is about how Satoshi has helped his friends find their dreams. And... help Kukui find the courage to confess to Burnet? Awwwwwwwwww
