The last episode of Sun & Moon. 😭 I’m really going to miss Alola.

So here we are...the final episode of Pokémon Sun and Moon.

The thing that stands out to me the most is that it really didn’t feel like a “conclusion” like all the past series finales. Only a few of our cast is really “leaving” and the rest just going on a study vacation. That said, simply moving forward can be conclusive in itself, and that kind of sentiment really drives home the fact that even though everyone is separated, the heart of Alola lives on.

Lillie represented the impact that Ash had for the entire Alolan gang. Going off to find her dad with Gladion and Lusamine is exactly the next step in her personal growth, and I couldn’t be happier for her. I’m sure the shippers had a heart attack watching that scene without any subs lol.

Then we have Team Rocket, who thankfully had a lot more closure than I was expecting. I fully expected them to leave everyone with Bewear, but the writers actually delved into their emotional reservations about parting ways. I’m a little upset that the TRio just left while their ‘mons were asleep, but I’ll just assume they had their tearful goodbyes off-screen, m’kay? I loved the resolution that Mimikyu went through with its Pika-hatred, especially with Meowth comforting the friend that’s killed him repeatedly. Between that, James leaving his Z-ring with Mareanie, and Bewear sending them off with a hug and yeet, I’m happy that the TR Alolan family left on good terms.

And then, there’s Ash. To be honest, the boy didn’t really need much personal struggles about leaving as that’s already been established. It was more so on how his departure would affect the others. After stalling and a random UB mission with Nebby (seriously, it just appeared out of nowhere) it made sense that it culminated in all his friends figuring out what would happen even before Ash had to spell it out. That one final Alolan surprise brought a tear to my eye. 

But by far, the most impactful part of this episode was the goodbye between Ash and his Alolan parents, Kukui and Burnet. There was no need for overblown dramatics. In a refreshing pace, the scene was quiet and subdued, but emotionally devastating all the same. We don’t really see much of Ash’s familial relationships, and seeing how much this little kid has brought the professors such joy just left me crying on the floor. 

And so, it’s business as usual in Alola. Having Mallow take up so much of the ending was a little odd pacing-wise, but a good resolution altogether. I also saw someone mention how Shaymin was actually the reincarnation of Mallow’s mom and I’m shrieking. 

Lastly, Burnet’s bun in the oven. Absolutely perfect.

It was a fun ride full of laughs, badassery, and truly heartrending moments. The Sun and Moon series pretty much exceeded my expectations in all fronts, and I can only hope that the Pokéani will keep its stride going from here on out.

Btw, I never understood how people came to expect to see Lilie kiss Satoshi in that one scene in Sun & Moon finale, before Gladio interrupts.

Like... there was no basis for it? Am I too dense to see it? They were just friends and Satoshi's friendship meant a lot to Lilie? :'D
