wylan isn't the only one of the crows who can play an instrument! matthias knows how to do so as well uvu he's a very proficient transverse flute, mouth harp and harmonica player 🥰

wylan finds this out by chance: he spots matthias in a music shop buying a harmonica

when he asks him about it later, the fjerdan looks a little bit embarrassed and mumbles something about not having enough money to buy the type of flute he can play so he has to make due with a harmonica

wylan offers to buy the transverse flute for him and matthias almost angrily declines because of how expensive it is

anyway, guess what wylan and jesper give matthias for his next birthday??? (they say it's from kaz as well because kaz has no idea what to give matthias haha<3)

yes matthias did tear up, glared at wylan and hesitated for too long, which wylan took as a sign and pulled him into a hug

matthias 🤝 wylan: being very nervous about some things because neither of them have ever been in a relationship before

one time when wylan comes over to find nina to talk to her about a fight he and jesper had (he would've talked to inej but inej isn't in ketterdam at that time so nina it is) he finds out that nina isn't at home either. there's only matthias

so he ends up talking to matthias about the fight instead

and he finds that he and matthias have a lot in common: both of them are together with a person with a very strong personality. it's their first relationship. they're still trying to find themselves in the world, and in the relationship in general

this talk + the music is how they find each other

i think inej has always suffered from a bit of a low self esteem. she knows she's competent, she can do things people value her for, but she's still scared of people judging her when she's not 'the spider'. when she's just inej ghafa. and yes, this includes nina, who's her gf/best friend (depending on how you'd like to see it)

but someone who's always safe? jesper

jesper gets her the way no one else does. if she wants to rant about a bad day, he's there, and she never once worries about him judging her

jesper was the first person inej came out as bisexual to

he held up his hand to highfive her, but when he daw inej's facial expression, he lowered his hand again to pull her into a hug because he hadn't realised how big this was for her

he didn't know at the time he was the first she told

inej began crying against his shoulder and jesper just held her and told her how proud and honoured he was for taking part of such a personal thing

in the future i think the two of them get matching sibling tattoos

since we're on the topic of niche 6oc ships and I really enjoyed your post on kaz/matthias earlier: do you have any thoughts on kaz/jesper? especially with the background that leigh said jesper was in love with kaz. I'd love to read your undoubtedly well thought out opinion on that

omg it’s so funny you ask this because when i was writing that post i actually at first wrote a little piece on how the only ship with kaz i really feel something for is kaz/jesper, but i deleted it since it wasn’t relevant but ! i love kaz/jesper. 

jesper being in love with kaz is so tragic and wonderful, i’m very happy leigh confirmed that. it shows us that she really knows her own characters, because to be honest, when you think about jesper as a character, it is so obvious. of course he was in love with kaz. he is a hopeless romantic, getting crushes and falling in love all the time.that girl on the street who picked up his hat when it fell off? yes.that boy working with dyeing fabrics that kaz sent him out to talk to? yes. that androgynous gambler at the crow club with pale patches on their otherwise dark skin who kissed him on the cheek when he lost to them? yes

so of course he is in love with kaz. kaz took him in and saved him. and kaz (even though he may wish that wasn’t the case) loves jesper with his entire heart. i think kaz and jesper is a wonderful match and as i said, the only ship with kaz i really feel something for. 

jesper has got kaz’s back and kaz trusts jesper. (which is why it hurts so much when jesper accidentally relieves their plan to pekka rollins.) i see jesper as one of those two persons in the world kaz would trust his life with; inej because inej would be sure to get kaz through it alive, and jesper, because it is possible he would survive, but if he didn’t, he would die in the hands of someone warm and genuine, a person he truly loves.

idk maybe i’m just speculating and making an awful job since it was a while since i read the books, but jesper & kaz means so much to me. i am so tired of fiction where two male characters are like ‘he is like a brother to me’, like just make them mlm you cowards (naruto & xmen i.e.) but in the case with jesper and kaz, i love the story of jesper falling in love with kaz and i think kaz would’ve loved him back in the same way if things had been different. but instead, it is unrequited love until jesper finds someone new while kaz holds jesper as dear as he did with jordie when his brother was alive. kaz & jesper is the only time i accept the ‘i see him as a brother’-trope, because with what kaz has been through, where jordie left a brother shaped hole in his younger brother’s life and heart, it is perfect.

hello pal !! ahhhh ok so, i saw that post and i was like FINALLY someone else than me is thinking about it ! because yes, of course i have thought about it. matthias is my beautiful scandinavian boyfriend representation so of course i have wanted him to relieve that he likes ppl of all genders because then i’d have a chance with him ;–) nina/matthias is a super good ship though, but i would so break them up if that meant nina&inej became girlfriends in canon

i find it super difficult when it comes to shipping kaz with people (for example, i am not a fan of the canon ship kaz is involved in, to the extent that i actually have it blacklisted) because of kaz’s trauma, him being in that kind of relationship is so difficult, which we are shown in the book, which is probably one of the reasons why he and inej didn’t become involved in the end. 

BUT if kaz and matthias was to be in a romantic relationship these are my thoughts: 

in the book, it looks like matthias comes from a strictly (binary and cis-) heteronormative patriarchal culture, where the main point of relationships is, in the end, to conceive children. men and women have different roles in society and duties toward the other gender. i’d say that the fjerdan culture we are shown in the duology inherently homophobic and misogynistic. (basing this on how when nina and matthias discusses his previous romantic and sexual relationships and how matthias comments that women shouldn’t act the way nina does) 

so the internalised homophobia would be the main obstacle matthias would have to overcome when realising he was attracted to kaz, but also him admitting that all of the men in the world he could like, kaz is the one.

while kaz’s main obstacle is his trauma and the fear of letting people close, mentally and physically.  

matthias is also pretty prude (it is possible that this has to do with the cultural climate he is raised in) and therefore, what i’ve interpreted, respectful of personal boundaries. and that’s great because he needs to be that around kaz to not give kaz a panic attack and/or get murdered

we know from canon how kaz handles liking people: he accidentally insults them, he lets them see him vulnerable, he challenges his skin against skin repulsion when he touches their neck, helping them changing their bandages after they’ve non fatally gotten shot in the chest. 

matthias and kaz’s relationship would be kaz letting matthias hand brush against the bare skin of the back of his hand without flinching, standing side by side, almost/maybe shoulders touching while they wait in the harbour for inej to dock, kaz fiddling with matthias’ blonde hair when it has grown out, them locking eyes during events and matthias giving kaz a little smile, kaz answering with a scowl to surpress his own smile which just makes matthias’ smile widen. it would be matthias asking for permission before touching kaz’s face to wipe away tears after a nightmare. it would be kaz making himself as tiny as possible and then leaning forward, burying his face against matthias’ shoulder and let the nightshirt the other man is wearing absorb tears. it would be kaz nodding into mattihas’ shoulder when the latter asks him if it is okay if he puts his arms around kaz.

it’d be kaz promising matthias to protect him from the drüskelle, since he is a deserter and they want him dead. it’d be matthias having second thoughts of joining the dregs and being with kaz brekker, because he is a traitor who deserves death. matthias panicking and kaz snapping at him to pull him together because if fate wanted him dead, he would’ve died when shot in the chest. that hadn’t been the plan for matthias helvar. and if it had been, surprise, kaz had changed the plan to something he thought fitting his and the world’s needs. 

this may seem small things, but for kaz, it is a step on the way to let people close again. he’d never call matthias his partner publicly. this is not because matthias is a man. it has to do with they liking each other is their sake and him knowing their romantic involvement will not last forever. but instead of worrying about them in the future, he tries to focus the present.

the present where they all sit around the table in the van eck manison, matthias with his fork frozen on the way to his mouth while listening to jesper and wylan bickering about which month during the year is the ultimate time for planting those new flowers in wylan’s mother’s garden (wylan says april, jesper says august) and both nina and inej taking wylan’s side, making jesper complain about how everyone always is against him and kaz commenting that jesper shouldn’t say anything about gardering when he has no idea what he is talking about. 

(does kaz know anything about gardering??? what is this man that matthias likes??? how come he knows everything?? matthias is staring at his boyfriend, the fork stil in the air, not having reached it’s goal)

Is it wrong that it kinda annoys me that Camilla is seen as this feminine Aesthetic™ princess? Like, canononically, she would be closer to being a blonde Donna Tartt. Clearly she's more masculine than feminine and wears her brother's clothes most of the time. I get she wore a dress in the library the first time she met Richard, but like....did some of y'all read the book or am I just crazy? Sorry to rant, this ask just took on a life of it's own lol.

i totally get your feelings about that because i myself particularly love camilla and her androgyny, but at the same time, i understand why and how people end up interpret her as feminine and aesthetic. my guess is because of our unreliable narrator richard. since the group only consists of traditionally masculine coded individuals, richard probably ascribe camilla extra femininity and people making edits interpret it in their own ways which leads to it being exaggerated and highlighted. even though we understand camilla is androgyne, she is the only person in the group expressing traditional femininity in some way and when you’re alone doing something like that, it becomes very visible. 

i’d just wanted to add that her vibes of being a trans woman who has not been out for too long is so strong and i love it. i love her short hair and how she still dresses in charles’ clothes. 

she has that short bob because she has not been presenting as feminine for too long so it was kind of recently she started growing her hair out. she dresses in “charles’” clothes because before she came out they kind of shared their wardrobe since they had the same style and body type. (with them having the past they have, losing their parents and not really having anyone else, they liked looking alike because that told the world that they belonged together)when richard meets the group, camilla just hasn’t built up her own feminine coded wardrobe properly yet. in reality, the clothes she wears are not charles’, but her own. richard interprets them as charles’ since he reads camilla as a girl so he expects her to wear more traditionally feminine coded pieces of clothing.
