rainbow rowell i love you. you reused the villain model for all three of the books in your trilogy and you pulled it off without a fucking hitch.

why do we hate the mage? because he led simon on, pretended to be his mentor, turned him into a soldier and a believer, used him, and then betrayed the fuck out of him and everyone he loved and left him for dead.

why do we hate lamb?? Because he led Baz on, pretended to be his mentor, turned him into a soldier and a believer, used him, and then betrayed the fuck out of him and everyone he loved and left him for dead.

AND WHY DO WE HATE SMITH SMITH RICHARDS??? BECAUSE HE LED PEOPLE ON, PRETENDED TO BE THEIR MENTOR, TURNED THEM INTO SOLDIERS AND BELIEVERS, USED THEM, AND THEN BETRAYED THE FUCK OUT FO THEM AND THEIR LOVED ONES AND LEFT THEM FOR (magical) DEAD.

like. yall it doesn't get better than this. we despise these characters for everything they've done. but. besties I cannot hate the characters. they are just. so. well. written. all three big baddies have completely different motives and backstories and goals for their manipulation, but. they are all fucking just, the same too. Now, personally, the only one that had me fooled was Lamb. I was completely with him and incredibly fucking esctatic that Baz finally had a vampire mentor that knew what he was talking about and took under his (metaphorical) fang. and then he used the fucking treaty and I remember sliding the book all the way across my high school cafeteria floor in anger. Even though I didn't pick up on the fact that the mage and Lucy were simons parents until Mitali mentioned that Lucy had blonde curls and blue eyes, I still completely and wholly distrusted the fuck out of the mage. and I hated smith richards from the moment I read the first s in the first smith.

Seriously, Daphne lived in Smith-Richards' commune for weeks and this is the biggest fact he learned about her? Okay, it's pretty cool that she doesn't ugly cry. My face is a hot mess at the first tear. But she has so much more value beyond her face. No way you deserved this queen's admiration.

okay so i’ve been stewing on this for a while. smith smith-richards . . . his first name is the same as his last name bc he’s redundant. he’s a copy!!

in a literal sense in that he tries to take up the mantle “chosen one” when he’s not. he also looks like simon, can do magic No One Else Can Do, etc etc

it’s also metaphorical in that he kind of has a similar character arc to simon? smith thought he was following every Chosen One narrative ever. he wasn’t just saying he was the chosen one, he believed it! he believed in the narrative! an idea that the whole book argues is fruitless, unsustainable, and, yknow, fake. (also redundant. chosen one stories are old news.) simon’s tried to live his whole life thru this narrative, and it’s messed him up!! there’s no such thing!! real life doesn’t work like the hero’s journey!

he has to face the fact eventually, like simon, that it’s bullshit and he’s not anything more than anyone else (magical destiny-wise). but where they differ is how they react. simon is quick to accept the reality of it—where he struggles is self-worth, aimlessness, depression, etc.—whereas smith jumps right into denial. he sees what’s happened and says “no, actually, no thank you. actually i’m going to ignore this and keep doing what i’ve been doing.” he lies to everyone, but most importantly, he lies to HIMSELF.

let’s go back to the name. it’s a SKEWED MIRROR!! smith smith would be a perfect reflection, but we’ve got -richards tacked onto the end. because it’s not a perfect copy. because there’s no such thing as a perfect copy of something that’s inherently flawed. because he’s human. it showcases the lie!
