s-nail (much more featureful version of mailx basically) is supposed to have native smtp client abilities, to be able to just remotely connect to an smtp server instead of going through the local one. But no matter what, it tries to go through exim.

Ok, well, I guess I can set up exim to do more than local-only, and then I can just use mailx or whatever. Oh wait, the Debian Exim config is bugfuck crazy, with a billion macros and ifdefs and generally a very complex setup... I think I got the right bits in where they need to be... but fastmail closes the connection. And the config is so wild I don't know what to do to try and troubleshoot... There are some blog posts and such about making exim talk to gmail (nothing for fastmail), but they are mostly for both older and non-debianized versions of exim...

There are directions for pulling out the Debian setup and starting with a standard Exim setup instead... hrm
