@snappingteeth replied to your post : We had an incredible RP-heavy D&D session tonight....
out of interest; I assume your D&D group is online…do you guys voice chat? or use messaging? Im super new to this whole thing and have started playing with some friends irl and was just curious about the diff ways of getting together with a group? Hope this isn’t too nosy??? aaah gurgles
We use a website called Roll20 that allows you to play D&D online, it’s basically a virtual tabletop program where you can input all your character info, have the map on the screen, click to roll dice, etc. And it comes with built-in voice and webcam so you can communicate!
The people I play with are also my friends though, so we usually bypass Roll20′s cam and mic stuff and use Skype instead.
But yes! It’s not quite the same as playing in-person since you’re limited to what you can “act out” via hand gestures and the like, assuming you’re doing a heavy roleplaying game. But you can still see and hear each other, and Roll20′s interface makes it very easy to play together.
EDIT: For what it’s worth, I’ve also played with online games that only used voice (no webcams) and simply described everything. And I definitely have seen one group that roleplayed everything out via text! So there’s a lot of ways to go about it -- ours is just the most "typical” set-up.
