Snatly Stanley parable

idk as someone who isnt getting into the field i've done a degree in (especially as it's kind of a competitive industry) i feel like having the burden of 18k in debt hanging over me alongside the fact my family can't financially support me isn't ok also considering the fact everyone here is kind of pressured into going to uni now eventually a lot of people will have degrees and surely that means there wont be much change in income in the future
But the thing with your 18k debt is you don’t have to pay it back until you’re earning over 22k (i think?) a year, right? Obviously it would be better not to have that debt, but the idea of doing a degree is that you increase your prospects and hopefully you’ll make your money back on it.
Having free university for all is unsustainable because over time degrees become less and less valuable, all the while graduate jobs in the country are being saturated because now EVERYONE has a degree on something and so eventually you get to the position where the state has huge amounts of money invested in you to improving your skills, and if you’ve ended up with not a top-end degree then you’ve basically got the choice of doing a job you probably could have done anyway, but now they require a degree because “everyone has one” or you leave the country and go somewhere where graduates are in demand and start paying taxes there instead. In both situations here the government doesn’t get a return on it’s investment, and you’ve only really improved your situation if you chose to leave the country. This is basically the situation now, and this is even with the government recuperating some (not all) of their investment through tuition fees.
So I think surely the answer is to invest heavily in vocational courses, apprenticeships and non-graduate internships, college courses etc and change the culture so that people aren’t pressured into going to university, get to a place where jobs that realistically don’t require a degree, don’t require a degree but could instead have some other form of cheaper training as a prerequisite. Then the value of degrees go up, everyone who is invested in by the state sees a return on this for both themselves and the state and everyone is happier. Once you get to this point, I think moving to a free tuition (not just for university, but for all education) model would be possible - everyone is gaining from it so it’s fair to pay for it through everyone's taxes.
but at the moment i don’t think it’s fair for your average taxpayer to be paying for university entirely when so much of the time it ends up not making a return on the investment for the state, for the student, or for anyone.
sorry for the long post, I really do get what you guys are saying and I know I’m maybe not in the best position to be lecturing anyone about this because i’m in quite a privileged position with respect to debt, but i am trying to look at this objectively as i can.
