I've been thinking about the the whole nobles plotline that went nowhere. Is it maybe the case that the Reiss family lied to the nobility about them being immune from memory manipulation? Given how strict Reiss was with the Ackermans and Asians, why leave such loose ends at all? If the nobility did have memory of the true history of the walls, it seems like at least one would have approached the Survey Corps post-Uprising offering to tell them in exchange for amnesty.

I actually think the nobles plotline regarding Reiss (and those involved) served their purpose well.

The Uprising Arc involved the overthrow of the old government and the unveiling of truth of the problems within the Walls. The fact the nobles couldn't have their memories erased served well to 1. Show how deep it went the Human Corruption; 2. How the power between politics and religion also aligned to work together and put their nation at risk (either with good intentions at their heart or mostly not). It also worked well to show that the Reiss family really persecuted and killed those against them because they couldn't have their memories altered, especially the Ackermans (caps 64, 69).

And while the nobles could really ask for amnesty in exchange for info, I think that - to be fair - the SC and Paradis needed a solid proof to explain what really was happening without bias and most accurately as possible.

The SC had already figured Titans were humans, the Walls were made of them, and an enemy outside the Walls truly wanted them dead; they knew injections and *eating shifters* could turn people into Titans; Erwin, Hanji, Levi and the SC leaders knew their enemies were going to be really extremely difficult, and needed to confirm the extent and the fully true reality - something the nobles couldn't offer properly because they had been isolated with them inside the Walls for 100 years now.

So, imo, the nobles couldn't offer more than scraps of guessing about who was threatening the island, that's it, the whole world hates them. And this has a greater impact with the revelations of the basement and Grisha's journals in a way that is, yes, fantastic and full of despair. Just like we love snk to be 😉 😄

Did anyone ever notice that there were times and places that seemed like Levi wasnt supposed to be there? Like in the meeting to discuss the injection, they were all high-ranking commanders or commanders-to-be, and then there was Levi. Or how during the meeting in Erwin's office the eve of their return to shinganshina Levi was sitting in the corner, tucked away, but still part of the atmosphere. Like he wasnt supposed to be there but Erwin wants him there. Erwin takes Levi everywhere.

I’m pretty sure you’re not the only one who noticed this Anon.  Levi really is like Erwin’s shadow in the run up to Shiganshina.  It’s almost as though he doesn’t want to let him out of his sight.   

It’s hard to say whether Levi has a right to be at these meetings by virtue of his rank, because his position lies outwith the normal chain of command.  Erwin created Levi’s rank specifically for him and Erwin seems to have granted him the authority to participate in important strategic meetings.  I answered an ask about Levi’s rank once, with a little help from momtaku, you can read it here if you’re interested.  

One of the other things that fascinates me about their relationship is that, despite being Levi’s commanding officer, Erwin sometimes asks him to do things rather than ordering him.  Levi even calls him out on this in chapter 70 when Erwin asks if he’ll be willing to take responsibility for the serum.  @2dsheep wrote a good post on this ages ago, and I wrote another one here.  

Of course the flip side of this dynamic, is that Levi doesn’t hesitate to attempt to order Erwin around.  He does this in chapter 72, when he tells Erwin to stay behind and let Hanji lead the expedition to Shiganshina instead, adding that he’ll tell everyone that he nagged Erwin until he agreed to stay.  That…that’s not how the military chain of command works Levi.  And threatening to break your commanding officers legs isn’t in the rule book either.  And this isn’t a one off, in chapter 80 Levi he tells Erwin to flee with Eren and the 104th, while the recruits and Hanji’s squad act as bait.  Poor Hanji, Levi never hesitates to suggest throwing them into the firing line if it will keep Erwin safe. 

Whatever Levi’s rank, it’s quite clear that his relationship with Erwin is far from typical.  Erwin relies on Levi’s judgement and he places an extraordinary degree of trust in him that goes far beyond what would normally be expected in the military chain of command.   

(On a related note, one of the reasons I love Hitomi’s djs so much is that they really capture this aspect of Levi and Erwin’s relationship, and the mutual trust that lies at the heart of their bond. On Your Side is a killer in this regard.)

Even if putting an end to the powers doesn’t equate to a magical solution against the rest of the world, it’s actually very well in line with Eren’s core values. 

What Eren has always sought out is to end oppression, and as the powers have always been used to oppress others, they have to go. Eldians are turned into human-eating monsters against their will, trapped in an endless nightmare, which is a fact Eren has quite a strong reaction to in chapter 70 as he recounts Ymir’s experience. These Titans are then used as a military weapon to oppress others. Even the shifters are given a death sentence by obtaining the powers.

So honestly, even if Eren doesn’t have a clearcut solution for the political situation, I think to him, ensuring that no one can abuse those powers anymore is the most important goal he needs to accomplish before dying.

And if that’s the case, it makes sense for him not to tell anyone because there’s no way the government would agree to sacrifice their one asset.

I really really really really really really really REALLY R E A L L Y hope they cut the scene where Eren says to Historia “you’re amazing” and she blushes and Mikasa shows up all ominous and jealous. You have no idea how much I detest that scene. ESPECIALLY the part with Mikasa, like if they have to include him complimenting her I just pray they get rid of Mikasa and the blush. At the very least Mikasa. Please.

I mean this gently, because I get the sentiment, but (and again, very, very gently) I think humanity as a whole would benefit if people would relax over the scene.

Especially since it is pretty much bound to be included; one of the magazine things for this season has the iconic shot of Mikasa. So preemptively, I’m going to softly, with the obvious feels of someone who is beyond fed up with certain aspects of everything, try to inject some chill.

People blush.

Historia’s only overtly romantic relationship is with Ymir. She blushes like, twice in conjunction with her. Licking and cheerleading at Utgard. Neither is really all that romantic. They’re moments of shock and embarrassment.

Historia makes Frieda blush as a tiny child by saying Frieda is who she wants to be when she grows up.

Just last month, Eren makes every single one of his friends blush by saying they are important to him.

I blush every single time someone says something nice to me.

Let Historia enjoy her friend praising her.

Historia has done very little as herself to deserve compliments. The farm is one thing she has absolutely done right. It is amazing. She. is. amazing.

One of her very first scenes is telling Ymir how she knew she didn’t belong in the top ten. Even with Ymir lowering her score, Kristoria is in the top eleven out of hundreds. Her prize is no confidence in her ability.

Eren saying Historia’s amazing is probably the first time she’s earned that comment, and known she’s earned it. It is her shining moment of “Yes, I am awesome *understated beam for ladlylike points but f yeah*”

…That Eren then uses his older sibling mojo to snatch away. “Remember how you weren’t always that awesome?”

“Fuck you Eren give me back my moment.”

That is the scene.

Eren and Historia love each other. Platonically, but it’s hardly less for that. Historia is one of the few people during this section of the story that Eren actually talks to, and vice versa. They are the only living people who will ever know what it was like to be in that cavern and rewrite a hundred years (+) of tradition. Their friendship is a wonderful thing.

On that note, Mikasa.

The text of the scene is that Eren should not be overworking himself and she is there to break up the party. The subtext is ha ha, Mikasa appears in an unhappy storm while Historia’s blushing in Eren’s proximity. Meanwhile, by the time she actually appears, Historia’s only still blushing because she’s yelling at him.

It’s silly. They are children. The whole scene exists to poke fun at all three of them. Historia gets a compliment for her altruism only to have her nihilism immediately called out. Mikasa is jealous over a friendship she has no reason to be (that sort of popped up overnight thanks to experiences she couldn’t share in), and covers it up with overprotectiveness. Eren overworks himself and is oblivious.

I have more issues with the scene than I will ever admit publicly, but it’s meant to be lighthearted and silly, and I think life would probably go better if we could all unwind a little and let that happen.

That said, I’m with you, it would be better for my blood pressure if they axed it. XD

(Sorry if I put you on the spot with any of this; I sincerely understand the sentiment, it’s just a reaction I’m trying to train myself out of. That scene’s been on my mind a lot too, and I’ve never really sat back and enjoyed it thanks to… certain things, plus not caring when it first happened. So I kind of jumped on putting my thoughts down clearly. Sorry if it came off as a dis; hopefully whatever the anime goes with will be enough to curb the wrath it inspires.)
