“Hope amidst despair” Chapter 131 analysis.

Although this chapter is very macabre, has a lot of death scenes, with a feeling of despair while reading it, it shows us and wants us to understand even a little, how it would be to feel helpless and how it may feel to carry the weight of so many lives that are taken by someone’s own will.But still, there’s also something else to understand in this chapter. From its first page, there’s a small measure of hope. Those two children, were stealing and collecting money for the purpose to help others. You can see the optimism in Ramzi’s eyes when he talks about it, even tho the other child, Halil reminds him that his hand was cut off because of that. Ramzi must have been through horrible experiences, yet there’s still hope and determination in him that make him want to continue. Hope is what keeps us going, we strive and wish for something better to come and we seek comfort to hold on to when we feel despair. When we feel insecure, when are afraid, we always have the need of something to comfort us. Be it a token, a picture of someone or a memory, a person’s voice or touch, a dream or a promise, that, is what makes us feel comfort and we want to keep that comfort close to us as possible, which gives us the hope to continue. For these children, it was the promise to help everyone with these money and they also had each other. When they faced despair and Ramzi was asked if this will be their demise, he held the bag so tight close to him, as it was his comfort to hold on to and gave him once again the determination to continue, refusing to give up.As they were trying to run away, the bag fell and Halil tried to grab as much money as he could but at that moment they both faced the terror of the Colossal Titans marching towards them. They couldn’t escape this terrible fate. The Colossal Titans crushed everything around them in each step, sending debris that landed on and crushed the little ones. Halil was crushed to death, his lifeless hands were still holding tight the money, they still held on to that hope, while Ramzi was still alive witnessing the terror and tragedy, he too was holding Halil's hand until the very end.   And so they died, holding on to that comfort that they needed in their despair and demise.“Hope dies last ” because the only way for hope to even possibly die, is for there to be nothing else left. When I read the conversation between Armin and Annie, I wondered, why Isayama decided to show this affection in a macabre chapter like this, while the rest of the world is being destroyed? “Just what are we doing?” I understood that, it is because of hope. It is in our nature to hope and wish for the better, there is always a light of hope that will shine in the darkest of times, even if it’s the dimmest light, still, it is the brightest among every darkness. Armin wanted to express his feelings towards Annie because he strives and wishes for something better, even at dark times like these, he still wishes to discover the world beyond the Walls, the world he once dreamed with his friend, Eren. While Armin is still trying to do anything, he is hoping and hope is the dream of a waking man.
