gardener!cas living in the country hillsides in a small, cozy cottage on the edge of the forest. every morning he wakes up to watch the sunrise illuminate the valley through his bedroom window.
after a morning cup of coffee, he tends to his garden with his weather beaten sunhat on his head, his trusty red watering can in his hand and his old cat Delilah winding through his legs
he likes to work in his garden in the morning hours when the birds are singing and his flowers seem to be at their brightest. when he's done watering his flowers and laughing delightfully after watching Delilah spring in the air when her tail got caught in the water spray, he picks all the ripe vegetables that poke out of the soft dirt.
he packs up his bounty into a crate in his cellar before hauling it and the other crates of vegetables he's been collecting throughout the summer into his rusty truck. he bids goodbye to Delilah at his garden gate before taking the 20 minute drive into the city to sell his goods at the farmer's market
while he would never live in the bustling city himself, he loves how the towering skyscrapers reach towards the bright blue sky and how the buzz of life is pervasive in every nook and cranny of the city. the best part of coming into the city though, is Dean.
Dean, the gorgeous, talented man who uses the stall next to Cas to sell his beautiful art. Cas thinks he himself is a beautiful piece of art; his arms are covered in colorful tattoos, his warm smiles are punctuated perfectly by his silver lip ring and his bright green eyes have a shine to them that always reminds Cas of serene days in his garden.
his work showcases the landscapes of the city and the people who inhabit it. whenever Cas has downtime between customers, he studies Dean's paintings and asks the other man to tell him the story behind it.
this is always Cas' favorite part of his days at the market because Dean's warm presence is right by his side and all his wonderful stories of the city he doesn't know are directed towards him. sometimes he can't help but envy the subjects of those paintings to be rendered with such care by Dean's talented hands.
today is no different from the others. it's a hot, sunny day, even under the shade of the pavilion, and business is good. Cas sells half his inventory before there's the after lunch lull in business. he makes his way over to the front of Dean's stall to study his new work.
Dean doesn't seem to notice his presence, in fact, he currently has his tongue sticking out in concentration and flicking his lip ring in a way that Cas finds far too endearing.
Cas smiles to himself before he starts to peruse the new paintings that the artist has on sale. there's are several beautiful landscapes of skyscrapers, alleys, and parks in the city that he is transfixed by, as well as a painting of a smiling little boy shooting fireworks in the middle of the field
Cas is tempted to run his fingers over the colorful sky and the ecstatic grin of the boy in the painting, forever amazed at how Dean can capture so much emotion and color in still life. he glances up at the painter himself to find Dean staring at him before his face flushes pink and he ducks back behind his canvas.
Cas cocks his head at the man's odd behavior before cautiously making his way over to the shade of Dean's umbrella. he is working on his canvas at an angle that Cas can't see, but the palette he sees gripped in Dean's hand is a mess of blue hues.
Cas is in the middle of his usual "Hello, Dean," when he rounds the corner and cuts himself off mid sentence
On the canvas is a painting of himself, but in a way he has never seen himself before. In the picture, he is peeking out from beneath the brim of his sunhat, eyes shining with imaginary sunlight and his pink mouth turned up in a shy smile. The background is a kaleidoscope of bright yellows and green that halo his face.
Cas can't help the gasp that falls from his lips.
"It's always been your eyes," Dean says. He clears his throat and Cas' attention comes back to the man in front of him whose freckles are shining against his flushed skin.
"When I first saw you looking at me from beneath that ridiculous hat, I knew I was a goner." He rubs at the back of his neck and huffs a laugh. "Who knew I'd fall for the only hot gardener in the state who can pull off overalls?"
Cas can feel his heart beating in his chest like a caged bird as Dean's words sink in.
"Dean, I-it might be narcissistic to say this, but it's beautiful." Dean let out a bright peel of laughter that has Cas smiling again. He ran his fingers over where Dean's hand is wrapped around the paintbrush. "My only wish is that I could paint as well as you so that I might commit your beauty to canvas."
His eyes flick up to Dean's wide, green ones.
"I could teach you," Dean says hoarsely as he winds his fingers around Cas'.
"I think I'd like that," Cas says. He pauses a beat. "And I could teach you, Dean."
"Teach me what?"
"How exactly it is that I pull off my overalls."
Dean's face splits open into the wide, familiar smile Cas has come to know over the months.
"I think I'd really like that."

The next morning when Cas wakes up with the sun, he doesn't get out of bed to watch the sunlight brighten his home. Instead he watches Dean, tracing the freckles scattered across Dean's nose and waits for those beautiful green eyes to open so they can start the new day together.
