bc of this folklore class that i’m taking, i’ve been talking a lot about fairy tales with my friends i’m taking the course with, and one of the things we’ve been talking about is the, idk, maybe immateriality is the right word? of the tales. like, things happen that don’t make sense, and it’s not material to understanding the purpose of the story. you are meant to suspend your disbelief and focus on the feelings of the characters, regardless of how well the plot or behavior is explained.

and i’m thinking about this when i think about why dean and john lend themselves so well to fairy tales. john is so absent physically from the story, acts in ways that don’t always make a ton of sense, but his feeling and purpose in the show and in dean’s life is still crystal clear. like, we don’t need to know everything about dean and john or john specifically to get a lot out of their dynamic. they’re relationship is easy to paint as epic and grand and tragic and intense, which to me is the hallmark of a lot of fairy tale romances/relationships.
