Newsflash! It seems I really CAN'T stand Jesper!

Six of Crows- Chapter 45

Fair warning- I'm sick and tired of Jesper, and I'm not holding back this time. He's selfish, short-sighted and danger to others, not to mention his sudden 180° regarding Wylan. He's a liability I'd- unlike soft-hearted "Dirtyhands"- get rid of before he could say "Three Man Bramble".

You like him as a friend? Sure, that's a choice. But he's not fit for less than low place in a gang or anywhere you might need reliable people.

Why this sudden change of heart? Because it turns out Wylan isn't some pampered heir? 

Is this merely bad conscience or pity? Either way I wouldn't build a romantic relationship on it. Wylan truly deserves better.

I know both Kaz and Matthias ~know~, but I so despise mindless emotional outbursts...

What's attempting to shoot anyone gonna accomplish? How can it help the dead OR the living that are yet to escape? *takes a deep breath* Half of the series. Let's hope for some development in this  area. We have a great revelation ahead:

That's Kaz's voice talking. As if responsibility were interchangeable with cold calculation.

Shippers seem to LOVE this quote, but:

a.) Notice how even when admitting his possible "feelings", Jesper doesn't miss the opportunity to insult Wylan.

b.) The sentence comes right before he's getting emotional about not being let on the secret regarding said "stupid face". I don't think Jesper's feelings regarding Wylan's likeness are the real issue here.

See? Liability.

What kind of an idiot starts boasting about something they're NOT supposed to tell anyone, and play all surprised it got out to boot?! Did he think those lovely enemy gangsters, who likely want that money for their bosses, won't say EXACTLY what he told them?!

It's not like Jesper doesn't know it's all his fault- he was afraid Kaz talked to Pekka after all-, and now instead of at least admitting his misdeed, he's looking for a way to blame it on anyone but himself.

Kaz truly has to have a VERY soft spot for him, because any half-decent leader would see Jesper for what he is- incredibly unsuitable for any work requiring trust. As long as he is a slave to his vices, it won't change, and let's be honest- I wouldn't trust him after that either. How many people never slip up once "cured"?

Why are they treating him like a baby?!

He's been around over a year- that's enough to learn the basics of living on your own, including dangers of criminal underworld. He's a member of a fucking gang, yet they treat him as some poor gullible fool.

He's like a scolded dog. He acts all contrite, yet I have a hard time believing the lesson would stick.

Kaz's grand failure

A well-written miscalculation makes a good plot.

Too much of too much is... well, one should be careful not to make an absolute idiot of a character, when we're not aiming at parody.

~Someone~ might be more obvious than he believes himself to be... Van Eck is doing this longer after all.

Wow! A limping cripple ~sprinting~! What a sight! And how ~useful~…

What exactly does Kaz hope to achieve? Get to Inej before anyone else and poke those Grisha's eyes out?

A whole book of describing this brilliant criminal mastermind, who doesn't allow feelings to fuck with his work, and in the last chapter Kaz is dumbed down beyond belief. I'm asking again- what exactly is he hoping to achieve? Run faster than a falling person, and catch Inej in his waiting arms?!

Sure, I could understand an unexpected mistake- a single glance-, but this is idiocy after another, all due to lack of control he's (up until this point, where we need a reason to drag the story into another book) never before displayed.

That makes two of us…

Van Eck is the kind of person, who believes that if there's will, anything is possible. Any mistake is done on purpose, any deficiency exists only to inconvenience him.

Wanna bet if the new kid turned out somehow undesirable, it wouldn't fare better than Wylan? That he would look for faults everywhere around, perhaps even guess his pretty new wife's adultery resulting in said deficiency? That said woman would be put aside somehow, and he'd go for attempt no. 3?

This kind of parent's rarely satisfied with less than "perfection". Remember Baghra?

And yet we're to believe an untrained Corporalnik of questionable skill is able to replicate a face in matter of moments because they "trained in secret".

Just wait three books...

Of course. A blade can cut through liquid and damage it... I love Inej, but this is pure bullshit.

If someone wants to insist parem'd Tidemakers can change their state without damage, then their weaknesses should be corresponding.

Yeah, he's supernatual airbender, but can't divert a bullet... I bet he's flying through farting alone. That's why the currents around him don't influence Jesper's shot...

Lukewarm take, but LB is really BAD in writing action, largely because she likes to set impossible stakes, then plot-armours her way out of it.

I really, really hate SoC, chapter 45.

There's Jesper getting on my nerves, acting like a five y/o who has no idea his actions might have consequences, plot holes mended by plot armour, and Kaz suddenly running around like a headless chicken after a whole book of ensuring us he's such a level-headed criminal prodigy. The last one definitely for the sake of a "cliffhanger" and a sequel.

Six of Crows- Chapter 44 & 45 (Leigh Bardugo)

I can overlook Kaz believing van Eck's lies about the Council's involvement- that's an explained character flaw-, but how can he- as THE criminal prodigy- be surprised ANYONE would keep some parem for themselves, is beyond me. That's just common sense.

After introducing an almost omniscient character, he's nerfed at the end of the book to rise the stakes and keep the plot going...

It's the Darkling getting shot in an arm so he can't use merzost all over again. Or Corporalki requiring sight to attack, yet still unable to influence animals...
