rereading six of crows and goddd it feels weird being older than them
I’m re-reading six of crows and I’m obsessed with how many details stand out upon re-read. (Spoilers ahead, but I’m putting the spoiler tag down in hopes people who need it have that filtered out). This is such a deceptively unremarkable exchange. You assume the first time reading that Kaz has a normal concern about his health, and that he brings up Jordie only because he was convinced he saw his ghost a moment earlier. Of course, this really had to do with Kaz’s trauma surrounding the plague & who he lost to it. It’s really great character work, establishing something about his past without the reader even knowing.
The brief flashback of Jordie also tells us so much about Kaz, especially when coming after knowing his backstory. When confronted with a reminder of Jordie’s death, Kaz thinks back on Jordie’s life. On their time together before coming to Ketterdam. It shows just how important his brother was to him. Jordie isn’t someone he lost too young to remember—he’s someone Kaz has countless, positive memories of. That right there is the core of why Kaz does what he does. With just a brief sentence, we are shown but not told about Kaz’s love for his brother.
Lines I'm never getting over:
You two are not fooling anyone.
“kaz and nina hate each other”
meanwhile kaz and nina
nina:
she cast a last desperate look into the darkness, praying for some sign of kaz. had someone got to him, too?
kaz:
kaz had considered trying to eavesdrop on matthias and brum in the ballroom, but he didn’t want to lose sight of nina when there were so many drüskelle around.
the man the myth the legend
i completely forgot i annotated my books and i'm having such a fun time right now. i bully kaz so much
i don't smoke but kaz thinking of inej as he's drowning makes me want to start
everyone shut up i’ve been rereading soc and matthias has such a healthy appreciation for inej and it’s making me go insane
