i will not speak of your sins, excerpt
Her only distraction from the looming thoughts of both Agent Mortem and her near-breakdown over it all came in the form of Captain Speirs, firmly stood staring out towards the opposite side of the Rhine, eyes narrowed, brows pinched and his arms crossed over chest, broad shoulders and straight back, set and alert.
It almost made her wonder if he'd seen something, if he'd done something. Yet, at this point in the war, they were all holding onto their last tethered strings, enemy or ally, they all wanted rest and the fact they had warmth in the form of bombed out buildings and a river dividing them, seemed to solidify that.
Natia picked her way forward, carelessly wiping her running nose on the sleeve of her fresh and stiff ODs, seemingly hiding underneath the helmet George had placed gently on her head, and memorizing what items she withheld in her pocket that brought nearly an equal ounce of comfort, equivalent to that of humans at the moment.
Slowly, Natia came to a stop beside the Captan there looking out at the near setting sun, barely visible with the silhouette of the opposite buildings across the Rhine, and the greyish, almost orange clouds cluttered along the horizon.
Sunsets had a way of defining themselves in a world so harsh.
" How are you feeling?" Captain Speirs asked quietly, his voice the quietest she'd ever heard it, quite low and for once, the normally commanding presence found within it had disappeared. It seemed the walls he built for war, he let to rest for a moment.
" I'm fine." she answered, her throat tightening at the words - it was almost instinctual to say it - she'd grown so used to it. She'd always been used to it. Saying she was fine. And the thought always crossed her mind. Because wasn't she fine? She wasn't dead. She wasn't buried six feet under. She wasn't lost to the enemy, she wasn't like any of the other poor souls and their cruel fates. She was safe, for the moment, and even safer there by the Captain's side. Yet, the response felt bland, emotionless and drawn out, like it were the end of its tipping point. And the Captain seemed to know a lie from a truth.
" That's what I want to say." Natia managed out again, shrugging her shoulders a bit, suddenly finding the dirty snow and muddy ground of extreme interest to herself, rather than the prying eyes of the Captan. They'd had their fair share of ups and downs, but she'd talked with him enough to trust both him and his instinct. Captain Speirs glanced over towards her and met her gaze that looked briefly up towards him.
" It makes you want to scream, right?" Captain Speirs asked her, as she stood, taken aback by his question out of pure shock and mild confusion," This." The Captain shook his head at nothing before glancing back at her.
" All this." he said, before his face fell a bit," War."
