Yea I def agree that a lot of BLLB felt contrived/too neat of a resolution (see anything about GM bc hello TGM was shitting himself just in TDT) and Adam's relationship with Gansey.
YES YES YES all of that. Greenmantle didn’t even ATTEMPT to get back or stop Adam’s plan, he was immediately like YEAH LETS GO PACK YOUR THINGS. And even Adam’s bit at the very end where he says he was laying in bed THE NIGHT BEFORE thinking about all the ways to rehearse his favor but then, EPIPHANY, he only needed the favor to save gansey’s life. when he had said that half the book ago? that wasn’t even needed, it felt like it was there just to drive home the idea that ADAM IS BETTER and ALL HIS PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED (or at least his feelings towards his problems are)
. how far did they have to go???pledgeallegiancetothestruggle replied to your post “this is something i’ve been thinking about and haven’t seen it...”
I was shocked even more Henrietta HAD an Ikea lol. But seriosuly, I thought it was the bed frame, not the mattress (I'm likely making this up), which makes more sense since you can get a used mattress mad cheap
that... makes a lot more sense. and I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE IKEA THING TOO. the entire state of Georgia only has one IKEA which is (understandably) in atlanta. how far did they have to go?!
softrichfuck reblogged your post: pledgeallegiancetothestruggle ask...
Basically my thing is, if a 21-year-old man took a bunch of teenaged girls who are below the age of consent out onto a boat that only he could drive and started making sexual passes at them even when they insisted that could they please just focus on the task and stop giving them unwanted sexual attention????, I count that as a couple of flavors of sexual harrassment, and I count it that way when a woman does it to a group of underage boys, too. Since you were wondering why I characterized the Orla-Raven-Boys interaction there as sexual harrassment and not something more toothless! You’re welcome to disagree, I just thought I’d explain where I was coming from~ (p.s. I love your username)

I don't think you still can't be right with that last bit (it's solid logic, even if I don't hold that theory) but BLLB holds some things that make it slightly less likely the case
OKAY I AM REALLY GOING TO READ BLLB SOON
softrichfuck reblogged your post and added:
I’m not really on the ‘Adam doesn’t know himself at all’ interpretation bandwagon, so I think this is where the root of our differences lie. I agree his relationship with Blue is a lot of going through the motions.
And even aside from that, Adam doesn’t work it out in head at all, which he does for everything else. For a character that everything thinks is so self absorbed, I would think since we sat in his POV a lot in BLLB, we would have gotten something more substantial out of it in terms of Adam working through what stuff means for him. Esp since Ronan liking Adam does have repercussions if Robert is as homophobic as everyone thinks he is. Robert is still out and about, you’d think Adam would comment more on his own behavior with Ronan if Robert were to happen to see him. Or at least struggle with the idea of what he was doing with Ronan was wrong or not.
There were opportunities in BLLB to talk about sexuality in a more open way, but weren’t taken, for instance Adam notices Ronan likes him, so I’m sure what was going on with Kavinsky was also obvious.
No matter what happens in book 4 it doesn’t change what’s already happened in the first 3. And I agree no one has to say aloud what they are, but no one talks about anything explicitly queer at all. Even in their heads lol. Even Ronan stays subtext for nearly the entirety on TDT.
I'm sure Adam recognized what was going on with Kavinsky as well. He's a smart kid. And you're right. There are a lot of opportunities for representation in BLLB that weren't taken. For better or worse there were other things she felt needed to take precedence over that. It's not a thing that thrills me, but they're her books, you know? The consequence of that that I do like is that there's no gay panic in Adam. He just takes it all as steadily as he's taking everything else in their crazy lives. It's probably not a fair trade off, but it's one that definitely pinged in my heart a bit.
Re: how pynch is being written, how do you feel about the way Maggie talks about it on her blog and such? BC I think one of my biggest things is how especially now, pynch is more 'canon' outside the text than in it
Quick note: I’m sincerely sorry if you wanted positivity here. I always feel like I turn into a giant harpy when TRC comes up, and I’m always negative unless I’m making headcanons. So if you don’t like TRC negativity, or just don’t feel like a dissatisfied bisexual girl’s rant is appealing, scroll on, cuties.
Admittedly, I had to scroll her blog to see. I haven’t followed her for months. But tbh it makes me shake my head. I think Ms. Stiefvater (I am neither familiar or fond of her enough to call her by her first name tbh) genuinely believes that a) she’s treating the romance the same as her straight one and b) that as of now, they are canon and ~representation~ simply because she and readers both like it / see it.
But neither is true, and that’s the problem. It’s sure as fuck not treated with the same blatant things. If Blue can get things written like “She had a crush on Richard Gansey,” and things like “I would just beg on off you,” wrt kissing, if it were equal, we’d get more than Adam vaguely kindasorta knowing Ronan likes him but not giving his own feelings. We’d get Ronan openly aching for Adam to touch or kiss him in the same bluntness (maybe not the same desires, sure, they’re different characters, but you get it) we get for the straight couple.
Especially from Adam. We don’t even know if Adam likes guys, or could like guys, or if he does if he likes Ronan at all. He doesn’t even deny it if he is straight, so he’s Schrodinger’s Bisexual right now, and I, the actual bi kid am sitting here thinking “please, please, I only know one bi character who uses the world bisexual and isn’t written offensively I’m so lonely” and that that, I don’t know if this means my hopes are up, down, or if I’m just confused. And in TRC, we see that Blue did like Adam, that she ended up liking Gansey, and that Gansey likes Blue, and that Noah likes Blue, but Blue doesn’t like Noah like that. Lots of clear lines are afforded to the straight feelings, but we only know Ronan’s end of the non-het relationship.
But, as I remember, Ms. Stiefvater believes that she has written them “equally” and given them the same treatment as the other characters. And not only does that not work in a heteronormative society like ours, but it’s just not true.
She also seems to think that telling people on her blog (where people don’t always see everything) that Ronan was gay makes it explicit canon, and that shippers make the hsip canon, i.e., the “Adam thinks Ronan has nice eyelashes” tweet that I’ve seen screenshotted. She’s giving herself credit not just for Ronan, who I still have some issues with, but for a romance that’s not canon, explicit, nor even explained on both sides of the relationship, so it doesn’t sit well with me. It feels like it either means I’m expected to be satisfied, or that that’s her idea of what representation should look like, because it’s apparently satisfactory.
So, while I don’t engage with her blog or read it (tbh I scroll past reblogs of it 90% of the time) and I’m not likely to start in the future, I was pretty disgruntled and unsatisfied with what I found.
It totally is more canon outside the text though, you’re absolutely right, and that irks me immensely.
(Also I'm proud of myself. Normally when I rant I embody the stereotype of like, Alfred Douglas or something; raging, petty gay wrath. I think I really reigned it in here)
