i saw on your /faq that you're up to getting random book asks every once in a while so i just wanted to let you know i love your blog So Much & i just recently finished reading The innocent libertine by Colette & loved it a lot! 💖 have you read any of Colette's works? i'm curious!
Oh yes! I have a few qualms with Colette but I really like her writing and the conventions she elegantly breaks throughout her books—there’s a very ornamented fluidity to her style, isn’t there? And a cheekiness, a constant wink between the lines. She’s at her best when she tenderly makes fun of her own characters. One of those French writers who must sound very lovely and supple in English translation.
That being said, I think she’s fairly inconsistent. I’ve read a few of her works by now and not all of them were up to par—rather like Du Maurier. My very favourite is Chéri. It’s lovely and graceful and tip-toeing exquisitely towards heartbreak. I also enjoyed Gigi and the first two Claudines. The Last of Chéri is objectively good but it’s so cruel and anguishing I don’t want to hear about it, ever. Let’s say it didn’t happen, okay? And on the other hand of the spectrum, I found Green Wheat off-putting from start to finish.
So yeah, have fun and have a lovely end of the year! Oh, and if you like Colette, I also recommend looking into Du Maurier, George Sand (tamer on the surface, but more sophisticated), and Renée Vivien’s poetry.
