Gravity Beetle breaks my fucking heart man. Every time I think about his background arc, it gets worse.
I have a number of :( about X3, the worst of which are caused by the Mavericks that find themselves fighting in defense of the Dop.
Gravity Beetle in particular draws my attention because his only allegiance is to his late brother.
He never became a Dopple Town resident and he wasn't even infected with the Sigma Virus. Dude stayed in the 17th Elite Unit until he couldn't take it anymore and snapped.
He sat on his revenge for all of Sigma's rebellion and ALL of the sequel effort, THEN joined the uprising just to get a shot at X.
What was going through his head all that time?
【The Beetle Bros.】
In the first place, it's gotta be tough having Kuwanger for a brother.
It's never firmly stated who's older and who's younger. I guess it doesn't matter.
(The Compendium says Kuwanger's older, the X3 Sourcebook info says he's younger. Beetle calls him aniki in the X3 manga. Idk. I've long thought Kuwanger was older, so I'll take that route.)
I mean, the guy's amazing. He was an (I assume A-class) Hunter. The fucking Blade Demon of Space and Time.
He's also a facts-don't-care-about-your feelings brand nihilist. Nothing really matters but the objective math, but he can't be bothered to pull the fucking math out of theory into sensible application. That guy.
Imagine the most insufferable nerd purely motivated by the numbers games in power scaling, put him in a position where he can do whatever the fuck he wants as part of his ultimate tier-list experiment, and you have Kuwanger's decision to defect from the Hunters in a nutshell.
Couldn't give one shit about being a cop, or a rebel. He turned coat and tricked out the Sears Tower Fortress Tower for self-indulgence alone. Sigma was just a convenient in for him.
You might notice that nowhere is Gravity Beetle mentioned in his agenda.
Curious.
Okay, maybe they weren't plotting these story lines in advance, so failing to acknowledge Beetle in X1 is understandable.
But he's not even alluded to in Kuwanger's background information circa Maverick Hunter X.
He's just not relevant to his life in any way, despite them being brothers? Aren't you two in the same unit?
Well…for a Reploid who's consumed with specs and performance, he might have seen Beetle as inherently inferior to him.
【The Beetle Bros., Bisected】
For one, he's plain slow.
Literally.
He's one of the slowest moving Mavericks in X3 at 3600rp.
Whatever the Hell "rp" is a measurement for, he's on the low end of the spectrum. Rupiah? He's worth 3600 rupiah in speed.
He's worth 6200rp in power, which is better. He does a lot of damage when he goes invincible. (Like everyone else?) Plus, a fully charged Gravity Well is nothing to fuck with. Even the little ones have good air coverage.
His maximum jump height without the Gravity Well is a little sad, but understandable when you remember he's almost 800 pounds. (It might take a lot out of him to fly, which you see him do in the FMV cutscene, and ONLY in the FMV cutscene.)
He might be the most balanced fighter in Doppler's army, but in practice, he's nothing special.
-
On the contrary, Kuwanger is demonstrably fast enough to clear several feet in fractions of fractions of seconds.
His pincers are detachable and have better range of function.
Like Beetle, he can also vault your stupid head into the ceiling with the Dead Lift(+boost without any windup), but since they come off, he can throw them WHILE dashing, cutting down on free space.
Like other bug-type Mavs, he's extremely nimble from his light weight. While you never see him jump, you KNOW he can get air from the way he enters the boss room.
He's the best parts of Cut Man and Quick Man on steroids.
When you look at all these lumbering, sometimes stationary Mechaniloids, he was probably a crazy effective Hunter during his tenure.
Pretty easy to see why Gravity Beetle would be left in his shadow.
Even easier to see why someone like Boomer Kuwanger would neglect him.
The math told him he just wasn't that interesting.
【The Beetle Bros., Divided】
Repeatedly failing to secure affection, approval, affirmation, or attention from the one family member you've got is hard enough.
Knowing they've gone MIA in the middle of a national emergency without dropping a line, then having to find out through intel that they've committed an unpardonable offense, is worse.
Being prevented from reaching them per "conflict of interest", then having them die a preventable death right under your palps by the hands of someone you trusted, is horrible.
Watching the organization you're loyal to rob you of any closure by denying you access to write an appeal for the rights to their recovery or burial, is crushing.
(As if the fucking Mother Computer's existence wasn't enough of a slap in the face.)
Seeing the guy with their blood on his hands receive accolades for his service, and then in the next incident, take the lives of colleagues who were victims of circumstance, to more applause…
I don't know about you, I'd about lose my mind.
It might even radicalize me against my organization.
【The Vengeance】
I look at his theft of the Airborne Aircraft Carrier as a parallel to Kuwanger's occupation of the city Tower.
He wasn't explicitly on Dr. Doppler's side, but joining his siege provided him a means to get what he was really after.
In this case, vindication.
His title is the Steel Revenger. His identity as a Maverick is staked on restoring honor to or getting justice for what's lost.
Like:
- His dear unit commander, who departed after the initial revolt and never came back.
- His fellow former Hunter in Dopple Town who lost his faculties taking an unforeseen bullet for his superior, then took several more when they decided he wasn't worth salvaging.
- Every hundred or so officers that die under the flag every year believing in the fear fueled dogma.
- The due process that should have been a right to all citizens, man or machine.
- The original vision of the Maverick Hunters as they quickly descend into totalitarianism on behalf of humanity.
- The peace of mind they hijacked when they convinced the population there were such things as evil Reploids.
- The restitution for violently mentally ill Reploids whose lives were ruined by haphazard coding.
- Those ostracized Reploids who don't fall in line with "correct" paths of thought, who get pushed away because they're expected to go Maverick.
- His big brother, who he believed was misled, who he insists would've survived if he wasn't barred from interfering by laws that are only mutable for select personnel.
To name a few.
【The Grudge】
Speaking of select personnel, how about X?
He isn't the source of the Maverick Hunters' problems, but Beetle's grudge against him is rooted in his perpetuation of its lies.
Zero also, but with X, it's personal. The bugs were in the 17th Elite Unit with him, remember?
I always thought of Beetle as X's fellow B-class dork before the world went to Hell. Maybe he even familiarized him with his big bro.
(Note how in Maverick Hunter X, he calls Kuwanger "old friend". They were probably way closer in his head. More ouch.)
From Beetle's point of view, X betrayed Kuwanger, right? To him, it's like, if he loved him like I did, why wouldn't he put in the work I would to save him?
Kuwanger's hardheaded, they have to fight, understandable. But round up his fucking parts, send his pieces back to HQ, do something to prevent Sigma from scooping him back up and reassembling him wrong.
Or you could leave whatever's left of your "friend" to be demolished with the island. That's cool too. (Honestly, if Zero hadn't come back, he might have been a little more forgiving. It's shitty, but believable.)
If Beetle was privy to any of the surveillance data during the first Sigma Stage, it'd feel like X killed him twice.
Sure, he's a pacifist. If that meant shit, he'd use the enormous amount of goodwill he has with the fucking founder of MHHQ and pressure him to write some more progressive policy.
That should have been his first course of action after subduing Sigma if he's so exhausted over "the destruction he helped cause". (Citing X1's ending there.)
But no, then Beetle had to watch him walk the same road again.
Twice, if we're counting the events of Xtreme, which take place between X2 and X3.
Overdrive Ostrich deserved to live. He was taken advantage of as a traumatized veteran without a decent support network.
Wire Sponge deserved to live, as someone functionally rendered a child due to various flaws in his development.
Magna Centipede deserved to live. He should've been reclaimed, repaired, and respected for his diligence as an abused POW, if by no-one else but his unit c0mmander.
None of them got a shot at going to trial.
Honestly, worthy and unworthy victims aside, should it legally be up to the discretion of a single federal entity to decide who lives and dies?
Excuse me, a sanctioned representative of a single federal entity?
It goes way beyond the license to kill, which does you fine in an immediate situation of justified self defense. No, we're here at assuming total custody of someone's AI in the aftermath of their destruction.
You're telling me you have a license to indisputably withhold their data from potential relatives, and more importantly, correction technicians?
Which: is obviously in the fucking conversation!
Zero was a face eating demon before Commander Sigma brought him in, and look where he is now! He was even forgiven for giving the highest ranked official in law enforcement hyper-murder rabies!
And he's not even a Reploid, who should all be WAY easier to patch, given they're shaped from the same internal mould!
Yes, that mould!
From here, the fixation starts with a few identified contradictions.
Isn't a pacifist supposed to believe in restorative justice?
How can people believe in his capacity for kindness while he's propping up militarism as a solution to crime?
Why do they love him when he's just as blind and confused as every other foot soldier under that roof?
Powerlessness turns it into envious hate spiralling.
Who does he think he is preaching about peace and unity?
Why does he get to keep the bot most special to him and I don't?
What makes him think he deserves a peaceful life?
【Bug Catching】
When you're watching imperfection constantly assert itself (or BE asserted) as wholly good despite loads of evidence otherwise, you'll start feeling insane.
The force's golden boys are going to start looking complicit and hypocritical.
You could leave. But "fuck this", resigning, and retiring in Miami is a formula for well-adjusted bugs.
You, Beetle, are "illogical", and your silly emotions always get in the way of you making smart decisions.
You're sticking around hoping to one day fill your brother's shoes, just to keep his memory alive.
But you can't suppress your hurt, or your anger, and you hate being here without him, and you hate your stupid life, and then?
Here comes this wise old sage promising you relief -- a chance at retribution.
Trusting people is hard, but Dr. Doppler's making it very enticing by using his genius to help you rationalize everything you're feeling. Sweet validation, at last!
Now, you take that newfound courage to turn your useless feelings into calculable results, just like your brother would do.
You turn off your intercom and abandon your post. You take an expensive chunk out of the Airborne Unit's fleet and help to arm the sick because not only can they afford to suffer the losses -- they deserve to.
It's all the power you have left.
You probably know you're going to die. X was always more talented than you. But you're not here to win.
You're here to remind him how unforgivable he is for doing what he did. And since you've found yourself in alliance with a faction of sick people, you feel particularly motivated to double down on that.
You're gonna beat the shit out of him and confront him with his own morality and you're gonna make him look at you for the first time in the near two years since he split your world in half.
And then he's going to match your outrage.
This isn't the answer!
None of what you're doing is going to bring him back!
You can't decry the Hunter Association, then lend our weapons to the violent extremists so they can do the exact same thing to innocent people!
This isn't even what Kuwanger would have wanted! He wouldn't have wanted anything from you at all! He'd think this was a waste of time!
If he were alive and you were the one who died, he definitely wouldn't have gone this far for your sake!
Just because you were brothers doesn't mean you meant that much to him! If you did, he wouldn't have defected!
I’m adhering with the general official manga/anime canon before the handcuffs are put on.
So, Light has dating experience, but due to his apparent single status at the beginning of the series, nothing lasted probably due to disinterest on his part (got bored of his partner). Yuri (bus jacking girl) stated that he said that he wasn’t interested in dating beforehand because he wanted to focus on studying for the entrance exams at the time, but I firmly believe that that was an excuse to get people to stop asking him out by saying he’s too busy.
L has never dated because he was never interested in dating. He was already “married” to his job, but Light became an interesting exception when the fascination/focus transferred to the person rather than the case itself. He thinks he understands dating and relationships in theory, but he’s had limited direct exposure (by choice and people being put off by him).
While I love that this father son duo got their fav drinks, and Fukuzawa has a mother duck toy, I guess that the one who brings the duck toys are Fukuzawa. Before Ranpo complains or whines about his ducks, Fukuzawa already fishes them out of his pocket (how his pocket could fit all of the toys, only him and God know) and dumps them in Ranpo's bucket. Then Ranpo gives the mother duck to Fukuzawa, and Fukuzawa just accepts it and puts it in his bucket. With content sigh that his boy is now cheerful again. Also the mother duck has a blue hat? How adorable???
I adore all the headcanons you have for different characters! ❤️💖💖 I wanted to know what some of your favorite headcanons are. (Of any character you like!! I saw some Hannibal 👀) 💖💖 ✨
WAH! I'm happy someone like my silly idea!! xD
Hum... I'm not super original... I'm ace... So I headcanon 90% of my favorite characters as Ace! xDDD And Aro if I don't ship them x)
/!/ Bad english again x,) I try my best!
Huhu! I'll try one headcanon by character I like! (not all of course and in no special order)
Rengoku Kyojuro: Aro/ace He adopts every single person he like even if he know you for 5min /o/
Otto Octavius: Pan/ace He's super good for hug. But he's actually too shy to hug everyone he likes.
Norman Osborn: Pan/Ace/trans He's super athletic ppl. Even before the goblin incident he does a lot of fight sport. So he can broke you with one hand even without the serum haha.
Hunter: Aro/ace He's albinos. That's why I draw him with white eyelashs. So he HATE the sun. Even during summer he cover his skin a lot.
Lilith: Aro/ace I think the "mom Lilith" Headcanon is my fav one but... She likes sewing. So she made a lot of clothes and plush for lil Hunter. He loves this gift even if she's not really good at sew.
Onigawara Tenga: Ace/pan These teeth are sharp because of a lot of figth with bad ending.
Hannigram: Bi / idk if they're ace or not? Will doesn't have nightmare when he sleep with Hanni huhu. And Hannibal talk in french for flurting with Will but it doesn't work on him at all. (but actually a lot because Will is Dorksexual /o/)
Josuyasu: Ace/pan (Josuke: nogender) Josuke show a lot of feminin stuff to Oku so now they wearing nail art and both use make up.
Faramir: Bi / No gender He try to be cold and bossy with his ranger, but he can't. So everyone respect him because he's super kind and patient.
Haha that's all for now! Maybe I add some later xD
Some random headcanon a cause I’m bored lol. (Mostly Regina Bones )
Regina( billys grandma) was a pirate who made a code law on the pirates must have permission from the pirate lords to plunder after she witness her son and daughter in law death by other pirates.
Billy Bones was a survivor at very young age and Regina took him under her wings and raised him.
Regina actually adopted Nathaniel Flint in her family.
So it makes Flint an adopted brother to Billy .💖
Both billy and Flint grew up together in Regina’s home and they’re both rich thanks to Regina’s being pirate lord.
Regina’s full name is Regina Joanna Bones
billy used to billy Flint due he lives in a spoiled life being rich.
But they slow warmed up to one another and became best brothers one another.
It’s how Billy became Flint’s first mate after growing up with him.
