Sansa I, AGOT

So I read a theory once that the reason a lot of people hate Sansa (or hated her at the beginning of the series) was because the first chapter from her point of view was so late in the book.

So let’s recap: So far, we’ve had

Three Catelyn chapters

Two Eddard chapters

Two Bran chapters

Two Jon chapters

One Arya chapter

(Making it a total of ten Stark chapters)

Two Tyrion chapters

Two Danerys chapters

(And four non-Stark chapters)

Anyway, my thoughts on Sansa I are below the cut.

So first of all, I lovelovelove Sansa and Lady and I am so upset about what’s going to happen

The scene of Sansa and Arya bickering by the river feels so real to me

Arya and Sansa are two years apart,

Me and my sister are a year and a half.

And this feels like a conversation we could have had.

Though with different content, obviously.

They both come across as a little brattish, to be honest

They’re kids

But I guess I can see why someone who has already decided to side with Arya, after her earlier chapter, might feel that Sansa is behaving worse.

And Sansa’s definitely got some class superiority going on, which is to be expected, I suppose

Bran and Arya socialise with common people

And Cat and Robb all seem to respect the common people, and know many of the ones who work for them (Cat knows the faces of everyone who works in the stables, and Robb seems to recognise all the names of people he’s given as options for the positions)

But surely they are exceptions to the rule

Westeros is a feudal society, after all

(I can’t remember if Ned has shown any evidence of swinging either way on this, yet, other than obviously knowing and respecting his direct staff)

Renly is “the handsomest man Sansa had ever set eyes upon”

I was going to ask why there’s not more Sansa/Renly in the world

But I suppose most fics only need one handsome-love-interest-who-turns-out-to-be-gay

And there’s Loras, so.

Aww, Lady growling at Ilyn Payne, and then putting herself between Sansa and the Hound.

Unfortunately, this is the only opportunity Lady will get to protect Sansa

Ser Barristan is such a sweetheart to Sansa

He and Renly and Sansa all bounce off each other so well and lighten the mood and it’s lovely

Oh bless, Sansa feeling slow and stupid. :(

This is a theme that carries over into the TV series as well

She calls herself stupid several times

Averaging out at almost once a series, I think?

I might be wrong about that

Anyway, I’m pretty sure Sansa’s eventual arc is going to be her realising that she’s not stupid,

that there’s nothing wrong with being a child, and having a child’s dreams,

that people grow up, and learn as they grow,

and that there is immense value in the skills and qualities she already possesses.

Oh no, this whole scene with Mycah is going to be awful

Nymeria protecting Arya from Joffrey makes this four counts of protective direwolves in three consecutive chapters, though

Alas, we know what this means

Overall, I guess I can see why a lot of people didn’t like Sansa to begin with.

However, I’ve always liked her, from the very first episode of the TV series...

I think for the very same reasons people dislike her - 

Because she feels like a very real (pre-)teenage girl

Arya II, AGOT

And we’re back in King’s Landing. My thoughts on Arya II, below the cut.

Aw, I feel really sorry for Arya at the beginning of this scene.

Arya’s missing the rest of her siblings:

The rest of the time, they ate in [Ned’s] solar, just him and her and Sansa. That was when Arya missed her brothers most. She wanted to tease Bran and play with baby Rickon and have Robb smile at her. She wanted Jon to muss up her hair and call her "little sister" and finish her sentences with her. But all of them were gone. She had no one left but Sansa, and Sansa wouldn't even talk to her unless Father made her.

Compare this to Jon III:

He missed his true brothers: little Rickon, bright eyes shining as he begged for a sweet; Robb, his rival and best friend and constant companion; Bran, stubborn and curious, always wanting to follow and join in whatever Jon and Robb were doing. He missed the girls too, even Sansa, who never called him anything but "my half brother" since she was old enough to understand what bastard meant. And Arya . . . he missed her even more than Robb, skinny little thing that she was, all scraped knees and tangled hair and torn clothes, so fierce and willful. Arya never seemed to fit, no more than he had . . . yet she could always make Jon smile. He would give anything to be with her now, to muss up her hair once more and watch her make a face, to hear her finish a sentence with him.

They remember Robb, Bran and Rickon slightly differently, but share the same memories of each other.

Okay, so I think in my post about Sansa I, I talked about how we didn’t have much evidence one way or the other yet about Ned’s take on class / ‘the common people’...

In this chapter, we learn that Ned really makes an effort to get to know those who follow him directly

However, of all his kids, we only have evidence that he taught this explicitly to Robb, as the next lord

Arya (and Bran) seem to have picked up the know-everyone approach mainly through proximity, curiosity and natural friendliness

So perhaps its not too surprising that Sansa and Jon didn’t learn the lesson

And anyway, there is a difference between the men Ned invited to dine at his table, who all have good, stable jobs, and the people Jon initially disliked in the Night’s Watch (the bastards of sailors, etc)

Oh, poor Arya. She’s crying and thinks that what happened to Mycah and Lady is her fault. :(

So Arya was born in the (current) summer.

I’ve been wondering, because the summer is nine years old and so is Arya, but I was trying to work out which came first

I think it’s still possible that Sansa was born in the winter though... I suppose it depends how long the most recent winter was.

This entire conversation is wonderful and heart-warming and iconic. I very nearly quoted it all, but that would be a bit extra.

The sword-fighting lesson is very good too, fun to read.

Jon II, AGOT

My thoughts on Jon II below the cut. This may be my favourite chapter so far.

Poor Jon, he’s so scared of Catelyn

And with good reason really

She’s pretty horrible

And I know she’s going through an incredibly tough time at this point in the story

But Jon’s thoughts seem to imply that this isn’t the first time she’s acted in a similar way

I think Cat is kind of like Robert Baratheon

Such a capacity to love

But only for a select few people

I think this probably applies to Cersei as well

The next sequence is so painful I can’t even put my thoughts into writing

Jon is very brave

Now Cat is crying. :(

I should have a ‘someone is crying’ tag

So far it’s been Daenerys, Jon, Arya, Bran, and now Cat.

Who will it be next?

Robb shouldering responsibility <3

This scene with Jon and Robb is lovely

And Robb is so lovely

He’s come across as a bit brash so far

But he’s just lovely here

Nymeria helping to pack <3

Nymeria and Ghost seem to have a closer relationship than the other wolves?

Like Ghost and Grey Wind were just together

And nothing

But Nymeria yelps when she sees Ghost, and last scene they were together (Arya I) there was affectionate nipping

This Jon and Arya moment is nice too

She cheers him up so much

They get on so well

They have so many in-jokes

I am sad
