Most kanji have multiple pronunciations, the Chinese (onyomi) or Japanese (kunyomi) pronunciation and there can be multiple on or kunyomi pronunciations too. Kanji can also have multiple meanings depending on the pronunciation and which other kanji they’re combined with. 寺 means Buddhist temple, the kunyomi pronunciation is tera (can also be dera in certain words) and the onyomi pronunciation is ji. I explained this best I could hope it helps <3
OH cool ! so it’s like in English, the bow that you tie, vs the bow that you give after a peformance - spelled the same, but different pronunciation and meaning! Except that because kanji dont represent sounds the same way english letters do, so the pronoounciaiton can be WAY different! awesome ! thanks for explaining.
