In these futuristic days, small bands of tight-knit net-based musical collectives roam the blogosphere and set the trends for music's new direction. Groups like AMDiscs, Somico, and Stratford Ct. aren't really record labels per se, but cloud-based production venues used to pave the way for releases by such artists as Malik Buthelezi (Sagevideōs マリク ブテレジ). Sample-based bedroom music has been in vogue since the summer of 2010, but recently a lot of those familiar chillwave and glo-fi vibes are getting cut with a Tumblr-esque kawaii trap-type flavor. Warm, mid-afternoon ennui peppered with early 90's JRPG tones and anime aesthetics is slowly becoming a thing, and so I decided to hit up someone who we feel knows a lot about this: Sagevideōs マリク ブテレジ.
1. What is the story behind the moniker "Sagevideōs マリク ブテレジ"? It was a name i had chosen when I was doing a collabo with Y E A R S, I had no name so I just made something up, and here we are haha
2. How would you describe your own music? It's very hard to classify what my genre is, but in it's simplest form it's pretty much R&B.
3. What are your greatest influences (artists, experiences, weather, etc.)? For artists I really got inspired to make music when I listened to The Dream (don't ask me why haha) experience wise I guess it was memories of me as a kid taking drives with the family around the coast of Cape Town, long distance trips while listening to my dad's collection of 80's R&B and my mum's collection of soft rock gave me the chills haha. For weather i tend to make "better" music on cloudy/rainy days, I really don't why but I seem to be more creative on Rainer days
4. What is your opinion on the ever-changing structure of independent music? Independent music has seen large growth lately, due to the ever changing need of the music listener. I'm all for change but I think a lot of indie musicians have changed their style to gain access to the mainstream market (although in all fairness everyone has to eat)
5. Does making music pay the bills? Is it more of a dedicated hobby? Not really, but I hope one day it will haha
6. What do you do for a living, and do you like it? I'm starting work in the new year as a cashier, before that I use to work at a Chinese store in milnerton haha
7. What are some other things you enjoy about life besides art? I really enjoy anime, videogames, yeah I think those are the only things haha my life is kinda based off art, hanging with the sus boyz and shyboyz (when they in town)
8. As a known music fan, what are some of best musical experiences you have had with other people's music? If I'm having a bad day I'd just play an album then take a nap, music really helped get by (especially through 2013)
9. Also, what are some of the most memorable moments for you in your own musical journey? There a couple, when AMDISCS contacted me, I was just about to go into an exam and I was in a really bad space then I got an email from them on soundcloud, that was prolly one of the greatest days of my life lol. When I was asked to play my first show, that was special, when Dante and I started our record label Dream Ocean, we got like 1000 likes in one night from one share haha
10. Ever have anything particularly weird happen while touring or playing shows (if applicable)? I was playing a set at assembly and someone asked me to play a song that I've literally never heard of haha (I don't even do requests anyway), when my lpd8 crashed (I had bought it the same day) mid set and I had to dj on ableton with just the track pad haha and when I played a set with Matt Prins as Fresh Sage at the smoking dragon(I think it's called that lol) we went to a club right before the set and got hella turnt, turned out to be the best set we've ever played haha.
A quick shout out to the squad, sus boyz (Dj hotwingz, bucket boyz, white guys connect, jon blood) shy boyz(brook, Ross, Thozi) SAGE CLAN (Dante, shintendo, Banele), Dream Ocean Records, ONSOL, yung bae, Y E A R S, AMDISCS, find serene, Dani, Maxinne(my akachan), The Acrobats, the assembly, Yoh! Squad, image-line, ableton, Akai, all my homies abroad I love u all
