Takashi Iizuka on Sonic Rangers: “It will lay the foundation for the following future Sonic titles”
In an interview done by Sonic Stadium, Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio creative officer, has talked more about the next main Sonic title, and what fans can expect from it.
While SEGA themselves have tried their best to keep their lips sealed in regards to the next main Sonic game, multiple leaks have given the name Sonic Rangers to it, and they have stated that it’ll be an open world game.
Iizuka stated that the development studio spent a long time trying to build “something new and challenging” for the Sonic series, and he hopes that Sonic Rangers will impact the following titles for a number of years – matching his previous comments about Rangers, in which he said that it will probably define the path forward they plan to take for the next decade in the Sonic series.
When asked if Sonic Rangers will be an anniversary title in the same way that Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations were, Iizuka said that it isn’t really an anniversary title.
“The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title.”
—Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio Creative Officer.
Iizuka expressed that the 1998 title, Sonic Adventure, was a more fitting example of what he wants to accomplish with the upcoming Sonic game. In the same way that the 1998 title impacted the Sonic series and all of its following titles.
“Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.”
—Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio Creative Officer.
Iizuka also said that the reason why a teaser for the game was shown at the end of Sonic Central was to reassure the fans that a new main Sonic game is on the way.
Corroborating with Sonic Rangers leaks, Takashi Iizuka expressed that the development team is trying something the Sonic series has never done before with the next main game.
“Since this title is still mid-development there is nothing I can speak to, but I did want to say that the development team has been spending their time trying to do something new and challenging.”
—Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio Creative Officer.
He also expressed that he hopes that fans will support Sonic Team’s new endeavor.
“Through a lot of trial and error the team is looking to present to everyone a new Sonic game, and I hope your warm support of their work can motivate them to really deliver against that challenge.”
—Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio Creative Officer.
Sonic Rangers leaks states that the game will be an speed-focused open world for Sonic to traverse through, set in an old gloomy island, in which he must find the Chaos Emeralds.

As much as fan projects are expected to take a long time, I'm getting kinda pooped out waiting for Sonic Studio. Do you have any recommendations for any "Mario Maker"-esque building games?
One that I downloaded but never actually got around to booting up was Mega Man Maker, which predictably lets you create classic Mega Man levels. I don't think it necessarily lets you make original Robot Masters, but there's an ever-growing list of supported robot masters from existing games and their weapons.
Beyond that all I can really think of is, like... how SRB2 has its own level editor. But that's not necessarily a building game so much as it is just a game with a level editor.
2022 Sonic game to be diferent from a Conventional Sonic Title, says Iizuka
The next main Sonic the Hedgehog game, which leaks from SEGA themselves and dataminers have given the Sonic Rangers name to it, was briefly talked about in the latest Famitsu issue about Sonic’s 30th Anniversary, in an Interview with Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio creative director.
“The new work scheduled to be released in 2022 took some time through trial and error on how it should [lead the series] towards the future. When we can release it, I think we will introduce something different from the conventional Sonic."
- Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio creative director.
Takashi Iizuka also adressed the four year long silence from SEGA on the next main Sonic game after Sonic Forces, and the reason why.
“Many fans have asked about what title comes next after Sonic Forces? We've shown that teaser to fans - that means we're working a lot currently. We've learned all our mistakes - and we evolve on that. So now our team is developing the new game more thoughtfully and slowly.”
- Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio creative director.

Takashi Iizuka talks about ‘Sonic Rangers’: “we will see an advancement in what a modern Sonic game can be.”
Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Studio creative officer, was recently interviewed about Sonic’s 30th Anniversary by GameInformer. Some details related to Sonic Colors Ultimate, Sonic Origins and Sonic Rangers were given.
hey azul! I saw this "sonic studio" name a couple of times on tails channel, do you know where did that come from?
It basically began to be a thing around 2019 or so, basically, SEGA wanted to create an area in their studio where (almost) EVERYTHING Sonic is watched and developed. Basically, Sonic Studio oversees game development, comics, cartoons, and social media. They exist mostly to keep the Sonic brand consistent, as well as a way to keep everything in one place, instead of all over the map.
Ivo Gerscovich is the president of the Sonic Studio branch, and Takashi Iizuka is now the Sonic Studio creative director, instead of being head of Sonic Team.
They also use this Sonic head now:
You can see Ivo Gerscovich showing this “new” Sonic Head in his Reddit AMA:
So yeah, basically, “Sonic Team” is no more, it’s all Sonic Studio now.
MarioWeen reminded me - it kind of rubs me the wrong way that a game like that wouldn't be received very well today. Ever since the advent of Game Maker, both the Mario and Sonic scenes seemed to get more and more ambitious and focus on imitating the games. While it's great that fans could now do that, the acclaim for that trend sort of reflected badly on games that didn't want to. The YoYoGames sandbox helped a bit, but with that shut down, we're back to "go big or go home". Thoughts?
I mean, I look back at MarioWeen and I don’t think it plays very well anymore. If I were to remake it today, and I made an attempt many years ago, I’d make it play more like a normal Mario game. Honestly, the picture I had in my head for how I wanted MarioWeen to play was pretty close to what the New Super Mario Bros. games ended up like, just with tighter controls.
I think you’re right insofar as a sense of experimentation is being lost in modern fan games. I know at the very least, that part of the reason there are “gaps” in what’s supported by Sonic Worlds Delta, is to try and encourage people to write their own code, but it also doesn’t work very well. People will just leave those gaps as-is, which leads to a lot of SWD fan games feeling extra janky.
It’s also lead to a lot of fan games that just feel... incredibly similar. Outside of the few “go big” games at SAGE last year, I can’t honestly tell you a lot of what I played, because a lot of it has been blending together for years.
At the same time, though... these frameworks allow more people to produce higher quality content with less effort, and I think that’s a net gain. Think of it in terms of, like... Super Mario Maker, right. There’s a lot of weird, wacky stuff people have made in Mario Maker. There’s a whole microcosm of streamers who play these incredibly intricate “troll” levels that are more akin to puzzle boxes. They just announced more than 26 million levels have been made for that thing.
And that’s a fixed system. You can’t change Mario Maker’s code. But you can change the code in Sonic Worlds Delta. You can insert new enemies. New artwork. New sounds. Most won’t, but most just want to make some Sonic levels. In some ways, I almost wonder if Sonic Worlds missed an opportunity -- by deliberately leaving certain elements unfinished (or half-finished) as a means to “encourage people to learn,” they might’ve been limiting their true audience more than anything.
And now, with the looming release of Sonic Studio promising “like Super Mario Maker, but for Sonic” the boat for Sonic Worlds being an easy way to just make Sonic levels has set sail.
That’s kind of its own bummer, isn’t it?
