The superb Revolver was released 59 years ago today. Nowadays no one could of course imagine Revolver with any other cover than Klaus Voormann's masterpiece, but this picture shows Robert "Bob" Freeman's suggestion.
Freeman had been photographing the Beatles for years and his work includes the cover of Rubber Soul. He and his wife Sonny were also close personal friends of the band and of John and Cynthia in particular. The Lennons lived above the Freemans' apartment when they first moved to London.
This turned out to be quite handy, because John kept going downstairs to shag Sonny when Bob was working elsewhere and Cyn was taking care of baby Julian. The affair went on for over a year and when it was finally revealed, it ended the Freeman marriage, the friendship and the Freeman-Beatles collaboration.
Sonny Freeman is believed to be the affair that inspired John to write Norwegian Wood
