since you're an advice genious or something I need some help, so there's this guy in my class that I'm sorta friends with at the moment because I only met him this year and I'm not sure. Twice this week different people told me that we look good together and I don't know if it's society or we're doing something, but, how do I deal with this? I don't want to think about it or people putting stuff in my head and I don't know how I feel. And I don't want to encourage it talking about it so i'm here

I hate this! My whole life, because I’m friends with men, I had to listen to this every now and then, and get this: I’m fat. Do you think I ever got paired up with my friend who was hot? or do you think it happened more often with my fat friends? yup.

Anyway, society sucks and people just like to pair people up for no reason other than movies teaching them that boys and girls can’t be friieeeends which is bulshit since I can tell you from the top of a 12 year long best friendship with a guy that it’s bulshit. What happens, however, is that people put this pressure and it makes you uncomfortable to be around each other and whatever you do will be used as a teen movie cliche to prove you’re together “oh, they’re uncomfortable around each other, it’s love” “oh, she just denied having feelings for him, she’s totally into him otherwise she wouldn’t need to deny it!!” and if you straight out call them out on bulshit they may go along but behind your back say stuff like “she was so freaked out, of course there’s something going on!” it’s SO annoying.

Anyway, in these 25 years of experience being shipped with whatever guy people thought was disgusting enough to deserve to be paired with me, I’ve learned that the safest approach is to give them a no way out response. I’m always emabrassed when I get paired up with people especially cause you can easily tell no guy wants to be seen with me so HAHA, I’m actually very good with this. What you’re gonna do is, when people tell you two are so into each other you give them your most sarcastic tune, your best roll of eyes and try to sound as condescending as you can as you say:

"Yes, you’re right, I can’t wait for my hands to be all over his lascive hair and beautiful eyes, I’m about to faint every time he looks at me. OH THE FAITS CAN’T KEEP ME AWAY." or whatever else sounds farfetched. Because that way they’ll be a)made into the ones who are dumb and uncomfortable as they’re been made fun of and b) can’t say you’re denying it too much because you’re so uncomfortable. In fact, you’re so cool with not having feelings for him that you’re mocking having feelings for him.

Bonus points if you can get the guy to do this with you, you can even work up a scene in which he dumps you like “haha no way, i’m promised to marry a young lady from the south lands but i shall dream of you” or whatever. From now on, they may eventually joke here and there and try to use that against you but you just making fun of them and it will cease. Some guys are not very comfortable with it but usually it’s just that they’re too young or immature to handle these jokes, sometimes just shy. But luckily, if you get to be friends for long enough you can do what my friend and I do nowadays when someone suggests we will end up together which is

"Yes, sure. It’s been twelve years of no interest whatsoever on any sides but I’m sure any minute now it will kick in and we will be climbing each other like a tree" while he nods and says "it will be wild, I’m sure the 14th year of friendship is the charm" and then people just shrug it off.
