The man on the right is calculating prices with his SOROBAN (abacus).
This photo was taken Ca.1870s, when men were still wearing the "Chonmage" hairstyle. Although such top-knot hairstyles were actually prohibited in the early 1870s, the Government was not stringent about enforcing it, and it can still be seen on many young men in images made throughout the 1870s, and even on some really old characters in the 1880s.
