I’m a big fan of Chinese and Chinese-American food. In the States, that often comes with the after-dinner fortune cookie. This is a uniquely American tradition likely originating with the Japanese diaspora in California around the turn of the 20th century.
But did you know these sweet treats can be used in magic?
I always keep the fortune slips from inside the cookies and keep them in a glass jar. When I wish for a hint at the future, I shake up the jar, clear my mind completely, and draw a single slip from within, in the Roman tradition of the sortes or lots. Whatever fortune comes out gives me an idea of how my day might go.
Something really nice about these sortes is that commercial fortune cookie sayings are generally positive-- so there’s certainly less danger of getting a negative or scary reading!
