Harrowhark makes “worst soup ever”, asked to leave mithraeum
something i love about the soup scene is how many little details are COMPLETELY RECONTEXTUALIZED when you know what she's planning. things you wouldn't even question.
harrow is pacing and jumpy in the kitchen: she's understandably on edge from repeated attacks and lack of sleep -> she's worried someone will walk in on her and realize what she's up to
harrow panics and adds "a great deal of water" to the soup at the last minute: harrow has no fucking idea how to make soup -> she's worried the bone marrow will be more detectable if the broth is too thick
john tries the broth, sets down his spoon, and takes a "discrete sip of water": the soup sucks because harrow has no idea how to make soup -> john knows there's bone marrow in there and he's just waiting to see what she's going to do
harrow flinches when augustine makes a comment about confessing before they find a finger in the soup: harrow is sensitive about her shitty soup -> harrow literally put her own bone marrow in the soup and that comment has her severely on edge
harrow uses all of g1deon's least favorite vegetables: she fucking hates that guy -> she needs him to drink as much straight broth as possible because she is going to kill him with the broth
it's just. such a good scene. it's such a completely different scene when you read it for the second time.
the dichotomy of a soup scene
what i really love about That dinner scene in harrow the ninth (no not dios apate minor the other That one) is that it is strongly implied in the text that john like. knew what was in the soup from the very beginning. we get told that he had a single spoonful before immediately putting it down and taking “a discreet sip of water” and obviously on first reading it’s just sort of “oh lmao harrow’s cooking is That Bad” but actually the thing is that everyone else eats it with minimal complaints so like. it can’t actually just be that the soup was objectively THAT bad right. no he 100% knew what was up right away especially considering his utter lack of surprise when harrow then Makes Her Move and all. which then makes it insanely funny to me that instead of. you know. DOING ANYTHING about the fact that all of his friends and disciples were eating human bone marrow which is a thing he personally finds disgusting and possibly even thinks is morally wrong, depending on how you interpret “ten thousand years since i’ve eaten human being and i didn’t really want an encore”. instead of stepping in and doing anything about this and maybe asking harrow “hello what is up with this behavior” he simply decides to sit there and watch everyone else at the table chow down and make polite conversation about the meal while they’re at it. like. he REALLY just chose to let it play all the way out to its conclusion for the drama of it all. just for laughs. if i had to be a cannibal once then so do all of my friends. can’t wait to see what shenanigans harrowhark gets up to next. i literally cannot with this man he is so sinister and manipulative but also just genuinely so FUCKING FUNNY sometimes what an absolute dickhead i’m obsessed with him
You put your Tibia in the soup and you mix it all up
a 5 foot emaciated 17 year old half baked lyctor who hasn't slept in days armed only with a bowl of soup vs a thousand year old skilled lyctor and swordsman.....
who will win
i've seen some people debating whether the little cigarette salute after the soup scene was g1deon or pyrrha, and i personally believe it was g1deon for two primary reasons.
the passage states that harrow looked him directly in the eye right before he did it, but doesn't mention his eyes looking at all strange or different, or use any particular adjectives to describe them (the words "dark" or "shadowy," for example, could be taken as poetic license to a first-time reader while actually serving as foreshadowing).
i don't like the idea that it was pyrrha. pyrrha already has lots of personality and tons of opportunities to show it off. let g1deon be a lil dramatic and personable sometimes! let him have a fun moment!!
