Review: JAWS-Southampton Joiners 22/04/14

Last night, the Joiners Southampton hosted one of the most exciting bands around at the moment, JAWS.

Although this was the third time they’d played the much-loved venue, it was their first actual headline slot, which they had very much deserved for a while.

Some talented local acts (Pella, The Pretty Visitors), as well as the Brighton-based Magic Gang, kicked things off and got the crowd suitably warmed up for the headliners. As expected, the room was packed by the time JAWS were due to come on, and full of familiar faces from their previous gigs around the south.

Some technical difficulties delayed the start a little, but it seemed to only get the crowd more excited for the set.

Opening with an album track that we are yet to know the name of, JAWS had the room under their thumb from the off. Fans were charging from one end to the other, and tumblers, bubbles and a beach ball were flying over the heads of jumping spectators.

This pretty much remained the case for the entirety of the set. With each track the crowd became more and more animated, until a full on rugby scrum/wrestling match seemed to unfold in the middle of the room.

The set and general atmosphere were incredible for a band who are yet to release an album. All the tracks from the stunning Milkshake EP were included, as well as a couple more mystery album tracks and latest single Think Too Much, Feel Too Little.

They wrapped things up with recent release Gold, during which a few unsuccessful stage invasion attempts were made, and the crowd let off the last of their steam.

With this being the fourth time I have had the pleasure of seeing the band, I can 100% say that they were at their best this time round. They seem to get better with every show and it has only made me more excited for what the rest of the year brings for them.
