UMMM???? Thread Magic???? 👀👀👀 tell me about that for WBW!!

i tried to answer to this yesterday and then my phone said nope and shut off so let's try again today!

Thread Magic is probably one of m favorite magic systems I've created to this day (not that I have created a lot but the point remains) and it's inspired by my wonderful friend @neliakey!

Basically it consist on the result of making different knots with different coloured thread (each color has their own property and depending on the pattern you come up with, the result has one spell or other), so basically I'm talking about magic friendship bracelets haha

Some examples of the colors are: blue for protection, yellow for energy and purple for defense!

Although bracelets are the most common way of using thread Magic (some thy are easy to hide and to camouflage from the Starless's eyes), you can make everything and anything! some people even have threaded rugs in their houses to protect it

I still need to develop this idea A LOT but I hope my answer was enough o satisfy your curiosity haha

Happy sts! What's your favorite topic to explore in fiction?

Thank you Alex - this is a really interesting question!

It’s really hard to narrow it down to one thing, but I really do love stories that explore moral masochism and condemn the glorification of suffering. Characters denying themself joy because they’ve convinced themself it’s inherently altruistic to do so. Especially when juxtaposed with empty hedonism…this means that my writing is often about food and sexuality and substance abuse and wealth.

I also just want to give a shout out to youth/counter culture, which fascinates me! And of Britishness/Englishness as something corrupt and hideous. Alienation/loneliness as well, domesticity I love (to write about, that is). Motherhood as well! And obsession/compulsion comes up everywhere without me meaning to, particularly the fear of (perceived) depravity.

I think I'd like my writing to be remembered as a hug or just really cozy. I'd like to tell stories that are good enough for someone to lose themselves in, you know?

It sounds really really stupid, but I've always described it as building shelters for people, and since i cannot reach that many people physically, maybe a book can feel like a hug, like a reassurance that everything will be okay

maybe it's just the foolish dream of a girl who found her shelter in books but it's a nice thing to dream about, don't you think?

Favorite paragraph you wrote this year? I'm deciding against sharing anything from Southgrave, and all my favourite paragrphs from WW are spoiler-y or gory. But i will go with: Olivia stands closest to the shoreline. And she cradles the sodden and eyeless head of Janine. Most important writing lesson you learned this year? From experience, it's just how important and effective it is to just do it regularly. I had something click in July that I needed to get this draft of Wormwood DONE, and went home and wrote as much as I could each day, averaging about 1000 words and the last 48k was done that way over maybe a month. How would you summarize the themes of your work this year in one sentence? The contrast between hedonism as emptiness and asceticism as masochism, I suppose? Do you want to try writing any new genres next year? I think the only genres I haven't sttempted are romance (no), comedy (no), and pure literary without any speculative elements (I would try it!).

Pretty sure I didn't send you a wbw ask yet so anyway happy wbw! Are there any people of great importance in your world? Great leaders, famous artists, a well-loved novelist, that kinda thing. What made them so popular?

So, my book is set in the 'real world' but a ski resort I made up myself so world building questions are always fun because it helps me really make the setting a whole world which is sometimes hard to do with realistic settings and also makes me have to answer differently than people with fantasy worlds because it's so vastly different.

Hidden Valley is run by Mrs. St. James so she's kind of famous in a way, at least to the workers there even the ones who haven't met her, maybe even more so to them than the ones who do know her.

Hidden Valley used to have an author living there and he became pretty well known before moving away, but he still comes back for a month or so a year, now with a revolving door of wives and children.

Some of the store owners have been in semi-local papers to promote their businesses and Hidden Valley overall, but no one outside of the state ever read it so not quite famous.

One of the employees ended up being a news reporter on a cable network show and comes back every once in awhile, but won't ever talk about his background publicly so he's not really connected to it much.

Mmm it's currently Tom 'cause I'm slowly figuring out how he's gonna work in my plot and it's GREAT! He's such an intriguing character off to boot and I can't wait for readers to meet him >:3c

Bubblegum Pink: if you could only write one genre for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Definitely romance!

Seems to be the genre I'm best at writing-- at least I think so??

Iced Coffee Brown: what is one character that readers wouldn't expect to do what they did?

Hmmmm probably Annabelle! She's a pretty good enigma and when... stuff goes down in later books... I like to think she'll really surprise readers! Mayhaps~

I dunno if you do Worldbuilding Wednesday but if you do, tell me what the most unique aspect of it is! Is there a particular race or beast or food that you invented you haven't seen elsewhere? What inspired you to put it in your world?

The question of whether or not I do WBW is more "does Coy have the energy to pretend they're running a blog today" and the answer is usually "no" but I answer this specially for you. :) The most unique aspect of my worldbuilding is probably my original race, the Kendrii, which I put into basically every project (mostly in the form of five or six OCs that I just reskin and put into all of them ehe). I really enjoy fictobiology and I've been working with the Kendrii for around ten years, I wanted to make a race that could photosynthesize and a lot of notebooks full of chemical formulas and diagrams later this is where we are, haha. Really wish I hadn't lost all of my work from middle school... Thanks for the ask!
