The Soulbound Curse: A WIP revamp & intro.

Status: drafting/plotting

Genre: contemporary urban fantasy

Themes: identity, control vs autonomy, exploitation, symbiosis and interdependence, power as a burden.

TW/CW: implied death, trauma, psychological sequels, violence, biological and corporal changes, cults, manipulation and power abuse.

POV: limited 3rd person dual POV

Summary:

When Agatha Hale signs on as a field technician for the glamorous Flint Foundation, she expects dust, long hours, and maybe a decent paycheck. She doesn’t expect to resurrect a mythical being.

But when her skin brushes the marble cheek of a newly unearthed statue, the world detonates in light. The stone cracks. And Jasper — immortal, furious, and catastrophically powerful — awakens at her feet.

The Foundation calls it a miracle. Jasper calls it a curse. Agatha calls it a nightmare, especially when scientists discover an unnerving truth: her nervous system has fused with his magic. What he feels, she feels. What he unleashes, she suffers.

Suddenly, Agatha becomes the most valuable asset in the world — or the most dangerous. The Flint Foundation wants to contain them. Rebel factions want to steal them. And Jasper wants one thing only: to never be used again.

When a botched containment breach forces Agatha and Jasper into the hands of the rebels, she discovers their “liberation” is just another cage — one held by a ghost she thought dead. With every faction closing in, and Jasper’s unstable magic threatening to rip him apart, Agatha must choose who they can trust.

If anyone.

Because the bond that saved Jasper may be killing him.

And the only way out of the curse… may destroy them both.

It’s literally the worst feeling because now I’m tired because I had broken naps 😭 I especially hate when it’s a weekday and I don’t utilise the time all my siblings are at school.

I also hope you get some energising naps in and that you have fun at all the Easter festivities ❤️❤️ followed by a fat and inspired writing session 🙂‍↔️

So it's not even Friday yet (important!!! Day For Him™) and my word count is zero. I start working on Wednesday and Thursday to decorate with flowers and I won't be able to touch my laptop then 😫

Only one of my original fiction works has a proper title, and that's All the Queen's Horses. The name comes from a Karmina song titled All the King's Horses, which in turn takes its chorus from the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. ("All the King's horses and all the king's men, couldn't put Humpty together again.")

It's just such a perfect title for a story about Fallon and Kris because 1) if something were to happen to one of them, there is nothing in the world could put them back together, and 2) there is also nothing in the world that can keep them apart, because they are more or less soulmates.

(Even all of Kristopher's father (who is the King)'s men couldn't keep them apart. Fallon would (probably) literally go to war for Kris if she needed to. It's something she's spent her entire reign trying to avoid, but if it were to come to that, she would. Nor would she ever let Kristopher be taken back to Oryn. She knows how much he hated it there and how awful things were for him there, so even if Pierre ordered him to return, she would protect him. Augh, I love them.)

((You could also argue that there's an interesting subversion of this that what does nearly separate them is a woman under the command of a man who thinks he should be king, but is not. So that's also a fun little nod or anti-nod to the title.))

(Not gonna talk about it here because this is already long enough, but if anyone is curious about any of the titles of my D&D OC fics, I have stories / inspirations behind most of those as well.) ((Fear & Hunger / Human Nature, my beloved.))

The thing about The Soulbound Curse is that it's taken that name really recently. It's my longest story in terms of I've been thinking about these characters for almost seven years now, but the whole plot has changed a lot since they first came to life.

It used to be called Marble & Magic, and had a lot more urban fantasy as it has now, but the title didn't fit anymore with the story I'm currently developing. Still, those two elements prevail in the story, they are just not as vital to it as they were before.

Right now, I thought The Soulbound Curse was a really on-the-nose way to explain the symbiotic connection between Jasper and Agatha, but said in such a way that could blend her scientific explanation with his own (thinking he had been cursed by the magic he wields).

It takes me a lot of effort to give things titles, but I don't like to spend too long without having one for a project (even if it's Project [blank]). Usually, they are also helpful to set the tone or the aesthetics I want to give to the story, or even the perspective, so when I find one that I really like, it's the one I usually go for.

If there's anything I want people to take from this blog, it's that creativity requires curiosity and curiosity begets learning. Also that learning doesn't stop when you finish school, and it doesn't stop with your favorite genre/subject, and it doesn't stop at the borders of your country.

Keep learning because there are those who dread you getting smarter. Keep learning because there are those who need guidance. Keep learning because it literally keeps your brain healthy. Be kind, but be smart. Ask questions, but also question answers.

You are never a lost cause. A lack of educational access, a disability, or oppressive circumstances may hinder you, hopefully only briefly, but keep the curiosity and creativity alive to keep your self alive. You're going to need it.

Daria was frozen. Fighting against the creature trying to control her. It was trying to get her to run. Daria was fighting it so hard when Mason grabbed her gently. She could hear the others talking around her but muffled.

Christine picked up the other handheld scanner, a thin wand with an infrared light to measure the object's density and detect cracks and other imperfections.

"You're in a real hurry today," Francis commented to her left. Simon answered instead.

"It's definitely about Kessler. We might stop scanning Static Artifacts for something a little more interesting." He raised his eyebrows expectantly.

"Don't get your hopes up. There are many teams working together; it doesn't necessarily have to be a meeting about J-001. Christine, run it through the bottom again; it didn't collect the data properly."

Even if the morning's meeting was about J-001, who would be willing to say that they would be the ones to carry out the tests? Agatha wasn't at all sure. Besides, it would be one of the first times for her team to work with such a precious and large artifact. They didn't know the extent of the damage, the extent of the restoration work that would be necessary…

Besides, it was a Dormant Artifact.

A speck of dust could fall in the wrong place, and they would suffer the consequences. It wasn't uncommon to hear stories from members of the Technician team who had ended up in the Foundation's medical center because a device had mysteriously activated. Agatha still remembered the time she saw one of the laboratories after a small explosion from one of the devices. It looked as if someone had decided to drop a small bomb inside.

She never thought she could define her work as risky.

"I think it's all scanned. Good job, Christine."
