“The ship is being drawn into the black hole commander.” EDI, the Normandy’s AI, stated; Commander Thea Sheppard simply raised her eyebrow incredulously, “I realise that EDI, but what do you suggest…” the Normandy shook violently, Sheppard instinctively grabbed one of the rails on either side of the Galaxy map in order to steady herself, “… what do you suggest that I do about it, Joker is trying his best”. The ship shook again and Sheppard clutched the rails again. Sheppard braved letting go of the rails and began to walk over to the cockpit, stumbling slightly with each tremor. “Sheppard, thank god, I needed to talk to you.” Joker greeted, Sheppard grabbed hold of a bar near Joker’s chair for support “The Normandy can’t take much more of this, commander, either we’re going to be sucked in, or we’re going to be crushed either way, it’s going to happen soon.” Sheppard just looked at Joker. This was not the way she had expected the Normandy to go down, maybe at the hands of the collectors or the reapers but she had never expected that saving that colony from their expanding sun would have been a game over. If Sheppard was honest she didn’t really ever expect a game over. No matter what, usually she and her crew pulled through, and the Normandy was a tough girl.
“Go straight on.” The commander said in a sudden thought. “What!?” Joker exclaimed, “Sheppard, you can’t be serious.” He looked at her desperately chuckling a little in the hopes she was just joking in the most inappropriate time ever, seeing the complete clarity in her eyes he soon realised that she was, in fact, completely serious. “Commander that’s insane, we’ll be torn apart!”. Sheppard shook her head, “We’ll be torn apart if we just hover here spinning our wheels, we can’t get out of the gravitational pull of this thing, so it’s worth a try.” She said. The commander was not entirely sure that she hadn’t gone insane herself, it was true the chance was they would be crushed in the centre of this black hole anyway and they would still all die but she didn’t see how they would get out of this mess any other way. “It’ll be an adventure.” She assured, “I hope you don’t mean in the death is the greatest adventure kind of way.” Joker still didn’t look convinced. The ship shook again, more violently than ever. Sheppard stared Joker down; he nodded in understanding, “Alright commander.” He said.
Watching the Normandy descend into the black hole was surreal to Sheppard but at the same time the whole thing felt weirdly exhilarating. As the Normandy grew closer and closer to the centre of the black hole she expected waited to be crushed into an atom-sized blob, but the intense pain never came. Suddenly EDI sprang into action again “Commander Sheppard, the Normandy is headed straight for the centre of the black hole.” She informed, stating the complete obvious. “Yes, EDI that’s the plan.” Sheppard explained, she heard what sounded like a sigh coming form the AI “I don’t recommend doing that, commander.” She informed. The turbulence was lessened now; they were just sort of being pulled the sensation was rather dizzying. “Thanks EDI but unless you have another idea of how to get out of this mess can we all just accept this?" Sheppard's voice was strong, uncompromising “Okay commander.” The AI replied. Suddenly there was a jolt and Sheppard felt what seemed like sudden acceleration the view outside resembled hyperspace windows in old stories from earth, with stars whizzing around their eyes. Sheppard was thrown forward as the ship suddenly decelerated.
Sheppard had to look out of the window for a few minutes before she could quite believe her eyes. It appeared that, somehow, the Normandy had navigated the black hole. However, where they had navigated to was still a mystery. “Well, this is new.” Joker stated, he too was looking out of the window with an air of perplexed relief. “EDI, where are we?” Sheppard asked, “I believe we are somewhere near the Omega system.” Sheppard frowned, “That was where we used to be EDI, are you sure?” she let go of the rail now, the ship seemed steady now, “That is my point, Commander, we have only moved a fraction from our previous position.”. That didn’t make any sense, if they hadn’t moved, what the hell had just happened and, more importantly, where the hell was the black hole? “Where the hell is the black hole?” asked Joker, as if he had just read Sheppard’s mind. “That’s what I was just thinking, EDI? Any ideas.” She asked, “I believe we may have crossed over into an alternate universe.” The AI suggested.
An alternate universe, sounded like bullshit to Sheppard. However, she had to admit that would explain how the black hole could be gone with them still remaining in the same place. “The Normandy is still damaged, commander.” EDI pointed out, Sheppard nodded, slightly dazed, “Joker, land her on the nearest planet and send out a distress signal, we’re going to need all the help we can get.”. Sheppard was weary about this whole thing, she only hoped that the right people picked up the beacon, otherwise they were in trouble.
