I did not know what yaoi means until after I looked it up, so based on the definition of 'yaoi' that it is a depiction of a homosexual relationship in japanese media, though it seems most of them are comics.
However, I highly doubt any of the works I've read before my coma explicitly feature homosexual themes due to the Comics Code Authority. So most works I've read were probably written and/or published independently, Including what I can remember to be Spirk fanfiction, so at least that confirms that I've read works featuring homosexuality.
This still brings the question about the Japanese aspect, since I took the time to ask around and some of the recommendations given to me are not of Japanese origin, going under the more broad term 'Boys Love' so I suspect that the genre has become more widespread that the Japanese origin is merely the etymology of the term for the genre, so as of current I'm reading one, and I plan to mix my diet rather than read a single genre. so with my reading pace of an hour per comic book and a month for a 300 word book, assuming I've read all yaoi for the whole year once a day that would be 368, due to new years eve allowing me to read multiple comics throughout the night. But a more realistic number would be to count all the book genres with romance having the odds of 1/50 (odds are based on number of genre not number of existing romance books) and the odds that they're gay is only 4%, so I'm going to be honest it's not a lot unless I'm actively looking for it.
I also can't give an answer to the total amounts of yaoi, as I myself have lost count to the many web novels, comics and among other things that I've read and genuinely do not look forward to finding and cataloguing all of them and then indexing each just to see if they're gay.
So I'm sorry sammzers, I don't read yaoi that much.
