3 and 59- modern au and interrupted declaration of love

This is gonna be suuuuper self-indulgent, but my personal newsies ship of choice is Specs/(female) Smalls. However if anyone wants to request specific ships I’m usually hip to 99% of the newsies ships out there!

High school au. Just like. I love the idea that Specs and Romeo are roommates and Romeo is ALWAYS blocking when Smalls comes over. 

Smalls about to lean in for a cheek kiss when Specs is happy crying during a Disney movie? “SPECS WHERE DID YOU PUT THE TOOTHPASTE”Specs meeting her at the door and about to say something about how pretty she looks in that new outfit? “HEY YO SMALLS IS HERE GREAT BUST OUT GUITAR HERO.”Like….. just a series of that. A series of Such Almost Cute Almost Confession-y Moments cut off by Romeo being an extremely dull so-called master of romance.And it’s one day when Smalls is over at Specs’s place and Romeo is out that Specs pulls together the nerve to say it. “Hey. I really like you. A lot. And I think as more than just a friend. And I love bein’ your friend. But… I was wondering…?”That’s the last coherent sentence the nervous baby can get out before he starts stammering again. Smalls quickly assures him that it’s okay, she likes him too, and has for a while.

They don’t want to rush stuff so they keep hanging out and doing whatever they were doing like normal but after a while Smalls’s stupid impatient heart can’t take it and she grabs him and kisses him mid-sentence.

At that exact moment Romeo busts down the door like “HEY SPECS I’M BRINGING IN JACK AND CRUTCHIE AND RACE AND JOJO WE JUST BOUGHT A BUNCH OF FIREWORKS LET’S GOOOooo holy shit whoops”

sarah jacobs as rebecca, getting married to jack (brian)

sarah’s family is jewish

jack’s family is...... well............. all the manhattan newsies

anyway

davey is sarah’s brother (of course) and the Inferior Twin because he is a HUGE NERD

SO HUGE THAT HE ACCIDENTALLY CALLS KATHERINE, SARAH’S EX, AND LETS HER KNOW THE WEDDING IS TODAY

KATHERINE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW

anyway katherine shows up and EVERYONE thinks she should have married katherine while they were still dating

davey and katherine, who used to be best friends before sarah and kath broke up, have a super cute friendship song and make up

aaaaaaaaand then kath tries to stop the wedding

it doesn’t work, but pretty much nobody wants the wedding to happen by that point

all the ladies get their hair done together and mama jacobs has trouble relating to these Millennial Childrens

meanwhile romeo is getting Extremely Drunk in a corner somewhere

SPOT CONLON, EXPERT WEDDING PLANNER, SAVES THE DAY

along with specs and smalls, the stoic and extremely tolerant hotel employees who push him around on a luggage cart throne

the wedding goes off without a hitch after that

that is, until davey walks in on sarah and jack making out with the WRONG PEOPLE

it turns out jack and his best man crutchie are dating??????

and also sarah and her maid of honor, snipes????

davey freaks out

shit goes down

kath only tried to stop the wedding because she KNEW sarah wasn’t into guys AT ALL

so after all this davey, who has been in charge of most of the wedding planning, is a lil pissed off because was that seriously all for nothing?????? davey paid for the cake. he is personally offended. not by the gay tho. by the money. seriously? ugh

and then mama jacobs gets n his ass about something and he’s like FUCK THIS SHIT IM OUT

he sings a very nice song about Not Being The Inferior Twin

and then kath walks into the room

and then davey kisses kath on the mouth

this is very confusing but very nice

davey may have gotten a little caught up in the moment but he likes where this is going

so now kath and davey are together, everyone else is gay, and they’re already married

eventually both other couples decide to come clean to their families about everything

sarah and jack got engaged because jack could only get an inheritance he was set for if he married a woman (this part include several very explicit observations by one crutchie morris)

also sarah is pregnant with jack’s baby because of an Incident which involved lots of alcohol

(speaking of alcohol, romeo is still massively drunk)

and then sarah and jack decide to get divorced and within like 5 minutes of this decision propose to their respective boy/girlfriends

everyone is cool with everything????? but also disappointed that the wedding planning all went to waste

and spot is like “i mean we need to have at least ONE wedding”

but they’re not divorced yet.........

ALL EYES TURN TO KATH AND DAVEY

“fuck it let’s fucking do it today is already fucking crazy enough”

so they get married

height difference game is v strong with these two bc Smalls is this tiny little girl that doesn’t even hit 5′0 until, like, junior year, and Specs is in the ballpark of 6′1 for all of high school and it’s super presh

like at concerts and some sporting events and other shit where everyone’s standing she sits on his shoulders so she can actually SEE

it’s so adorable it’s ridiculous

and like we’re all aware Specs is a total nerd and definitely a marshal and probably in the top 5 of his class but Smalls is a smart cookie too she just cares a bit less and he totally tutors her when necessary (perks of having a smart boyfriend in the grade above you)

(when they pick marshals her junior year she’s one spot short and she’s so mad because she was actually trying dammit)

they’re almost sickeningly cute but not like in a pda way like they’re v cute and blushy and hand-holdy but that’s usually as far as the pda goes

but like when Smalls is tired she’s vvv cuddly and physically affectionate (and a little loopy whoops) so like sometimes at lunch the day after an all-nighter she doesn’t even sit in a seat she just sits on his lap and tries to cuddle the whole period

and like Specs is a dancer and a mt nerd so she shows up to every recital and every opening night with flowers and candy, even before they started dating

speaking of which he def started crushing first and he was so fucking awkward but like she was v oblivious to that fact

so like he was all blushy and stuttering all the time and she’s just like ??? the fuck is wrong with you what are you doing

and then she starts to like him back and he asks her out and she’s just like o h

she steals his hoodies constantly and they’re literally all the way down to her knees and it’s the cutest thing and like he’ll be freezing his ass off but she just looks too adorable for him to ask for it back

and like Specs is an anxious little baby so like when he’s v stressed out during midterms and finals and always about 5 seconds away from an anxiety attack she’s vvv good at calming him down bc she’s v chill

i cannot even convey how cute this ship is it is unreal

AAAAAAAAAH well i’m pretty sure smallsisnotonfire is the real authority on specs/smalls. But I’ll try!

Alright this is gonna be mostly modern au because honestly I don’t know what 1899 was like and I like to get tropey

Okay but honestly I think a good place to start is a post I saw like maybe an hour ago? it was like “in a cheesy high school movie specs would be the guy who tries to become a cool jock to win over the girl but really she’s into his dorky sweater vests” and can we take a moment to back up and imagine specs begging sniper to give him a makeover and tips on how to win over smalls and him trying to impress her by being a jock but literally he can’t sports at all and eventually she’s like “okay can you stop? just go put back on the sweater.” and then it’s just really awkward until he goes to her game and they decide to like go out to eat at like Culver’s or something (I don’t know why I feel like they’re a Culver’s couple?) and well it’s still awkward for a few minutes until it starts feeling kind of just like hanging out

Smalls is ready to fight at a n y m o m e n t but Specs is a lot more cool and collected and he has to talk her down a lot when she’s about to do something impulsive

I feel like Specs is a mathlete. And he’s in chess club. And he’s in ROTC. I just felt the need to say that

HE TUTORS HER

it’s really cute ohmygosh and cheesy they reach that “break through” moment or whatever and they both get really excited when she starts getting the math stuff and bouncing up and down and then there’s like some throat clearing “we should get back to work”
