The Spine Hc Angst Relating to Peter Walter I

This sorta turns into borderline a full backstory but aa who cares

Zer0 was abandoned and Rabbit was literally killed by Peter Walter I. I refuse to believe The Spine was such a perfect robot that Peter just left him alone.

I like to believe that after the success of Rabbit’s invention, Peter held The Spine to a much greater standard. So much greater to the point where he wasn’t being realistic. He knew he had the capabilities to program The Spine to be exactly what he wanted The Spine to be.

Two conflicting traits he gave were curiosity and maturity. Though curiosity isn’t inherently childish, you could only ask so many questions before people would assume you were born yesterday.

Because he expects The Spine to be mature, he doesn’t allow The Spine to indulge in any “childish“ activities.

One thing is that Rabbit thinks Peter prefers The Spine because he’s dedicated so much time into perfecting him, but The Spine thinks Peter prefers Rabbit because he seems like he actually likes her and she has many more permissions than he does.

Sometimes Peter will read stories to Rabbit to help her power down, but when The Spine asks to be read stories, he says no since The Spine is supposed to be, “More mature than Rabbit, and he doesn’t need them”. Rabbit might read The Spine stories in secret on occasion.

The Spine was not allowed to play with toys. If he was ever caught with a toy of any kind, they would be given away or destroyed depending on the quality of the toy.

The Spine was never allowed to read children books or watch children shows. He would have his siblings update him on any of his interests in media made for children if he had any.

He’s not allowed to play with his siblings, but instead, he’s expected to supervise.

Overall, he was expected to be “The best robot”. Whenever he wasn’t, he’d get adjusted, which he hated because he never knew what parts of him Peter was going to change. Most of the time he wouldn’t know what he did wrong. Which if he couldn’t figure out what he did wrong, the adjusting process would take 10x longer. The Spine would find himself overthinking everything he did wrong when he couldn’t be the perfect robot. This is part of the reason why he cares so much about the public perception of him.

During moments where he broke, he felt embarrassed and guilty. Peter would never tell him that his system failures were his fault, but he’d complain a lot whenever he had to fix them, making The Spine feel as if it was his fault for all the times he was broken. Like he was Wired Wrong.

Eventually, he’d start repairing himself. Which he got praise for, but if he ever made a mistake, boy did he feel like a failure. He’d be terrified of admitting to Peter Walter that he broke himself, but he would confess when he needed to because Peter would only get madder if he tried to hide it. Still, he was yelled at every time he made a mistake in fixing himself. The Spine would still keep trying though because he’d breakdown less when he attended to himself. His biggest issue is that he can get a bit too good at fixing himself and ends up overdoing it. Hence, over attenuated hydraulics.

Of course, after Delilah’s death, Peter was a lot more strict and critical with The Spine. There were times where The Spine was treated poorly due to Peter’s grief alone, but because he didn’t understand grief, he thought that his existence was the problem. He’d end up being hyper-aware of every little thing he did. Thinking that there was some sort of special way to behave around Peter in order to avoid setting him off. He was cautious of everything. His walk, his voice, the sound of the steam leaving his body, the glow of his eyes. He didn’t know what it was that would hurt Peter Walter I, but he always thought it was himself.

When Peter I died, the pressure to be the perfect robot only got stronger, so it ended up becoming a core aspect of his personality. To be the most mature, well maintained, and to keep his siblings in check.

It wasn’t until Peter Walter VI where he’d start to embrace his inner child. After seeing how well he responded to the rest of his siblings’ changes. He finally felt more comfortable with being himself. A tall robot dork.

OK SO im really sorry it took me THIS long to get to this i quite literally.. forgot i had smth in my inbox woopsies. the reason i remembered is cause mootie posted some Spine hcs and i was like "woah"

alsooo im not good at putting my thoughts onto "paper" especially in english so you will have to excuse me

anywho my jon headcanons some sad some random /ref

First of all i think that his relationship with Peter Walter I would be far from close. he would be seen as the type of child who's both "too much mess to take care of" and "strong enough to take care of himself" if that makes sense. Peter did love him as his creation but would openly admit that he's not his proudest one, meanwhile Jon wouldn't feel much connection at all. he sympathized with his creator but only in a way he would with any other human being, there was more gratitude than love

Jon struggles with constant malfunctions and his mechanisms are a mess (partially because he gets himself in trouble all the time), so at one point Peter would get tired of fixing him so frequently, and tell him that he can just "walk some things off". That thought stuck to the bot and he would think of all of his malfunctions as slight inconveniences, i mean, he can still perform so why pay attention to the constant neck pain or powering up struggles ? it just became a habit and he kind of forgot that things like that shouldn't be ignored

After a long while when Peter Walter VI grew up enough to start learning more about how automatons work, Jon would be used as a "lab rat" (not really but its just what he himself called it) for young VI to practice fixing mechanisms. thats pretty much when he heard "Wait this cant be right" about his messed up physical state for the first time in a long while. little Peter didnt get to fix all of the things that were wrong with Jon's body, but he did manage to take care of some of them, which almost surprised Jon with how nice it felt to not hear pieces of broken gears rattle in his head every time he moved (who wouldve thunk)

ok now to more lighthearted stuff !!

Jon actually has a very strong bond with Sam ! He loves watching the mustached man work and sometimes follows him around, just enjoying his company. At first Sam thought that the tone-gold automaton was creepy and uncanny, but grew attached to him and his stupidity (/lh). i also think that Sam would be one of the few Walter workers who dont baby the Jon and actually treat him like they would treat any other robot :3

Also Jon just loves his robot family endlessly. shocker !! im not sure how explain it but i think hes the only one to look at other Walter automatons and go "bro i love them so much" at all times. in his head at least. obviously he teases them and argues with them but he wont think twice before accepting a hug from his siblings (except for Upgrade theyre rivals /j)

Speaking of Upgrade !! They feel the most sibling-ish to me (aside from Rabbit & The Spine) because they constantly poke fun at each other yet they still are willing to give each other help and comfort when needed. She once had to carry him all the way back to the Walter manor because they forgot to take some extra cans of crystal pepsi

Also Upgrade got in an accident once which caused her to have a fractured face for a couple of days, and Jon was there the entire time to comfort her and constantly tell her that shes still very pretty

Unlike with other robots, the food that Jon eats doesnt just fall through his uncovered jaw/run into his boiler or anything like this, instead it just. disappears. once he closes his mouth the food just vanishes into the unknown, yet Jon claims that he enjoys the process of "eating" (nobody knows how it works)

LITTLE GIRLS THAT GO TO SPG SHOWS LOVE HIM !! once the band finishes performing, he constantly gets pulled away by a small giggling pink-ish blob to join their tea party or hula hooping contest. thats why he has quite a knowledge on "girly" themes and educates other automatons on the matter

headcanon/theory that the bots were built incapable of speech

so when Peter the first built the bots, they were intended to serenade Delilah right? So it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for them to talk at all until the war. Once that rolled around, they probably had a few phrases downloaded so they could communicate (although primitively) with each other and the soldiers. After the war, once they were re-purposed for music alone, whatever Peter was around at that time likely started downloading words and phrases into them so they could entertain the audience, but probably not many. If you watch pretty much any Balboa Park video, there’s substantially less talking other than pre-rehearsed bits; there still is plenty of improv, but back then the bots likely didn’t have as large of a vocabulary as they do now. As time progressed, they got upgrades and repairs until now when they can converse and even do improv pretty much like any human could. Starting out incapable of much speech would explain a lot of things though, like Rabbit’s stutter (she had to be repaired many times and at one point completely rebuilt so programming words and phrases for her probably would have been incredibly difficult with all the resets she needed and especially when she transitioned since her whole system likely had to be rebooted), Hatch’s interest in stuff like imagery and nouns and verbs, and why the Jon likes to just say random words (he’s experimenting!) If you read that whole thing congrats it was long I know 😅

The Jon headcanons because I have been inspired by @chaotic-tired-bastard and @owlhari and my brain is going whirrrrrrrrrrrrr :]

-gives kisses to everyone platonically. in an older vid you can see him do this to Upgrade and I'd like to think it's one of his ways of showing affection

-love language is mostly physical touch and sometimes gift giving, he likes doodling and anything crafty/colorful

-this is one Owlhari brings up in their vid of the bots and disorders, but I also like to think The Jon has an extremely overactive and vast imagination, often imagining himself as the characters the band sings about and daydreaming in his freetime. these adventures can often be seen leaking into his songs and other mediums

-ADORES birds. no crazy reason either, he just thinks they're pretty and wishes he could fly like one. some of his favorites are robins, kingfishers, parakeets/parrots, doves, and bluejays, and if you catch him in a good mood he can be heard whistling like birds

-loves making all sorts of forts and structures out of the silly things in his room. his room is rather large and filled with curious objects and way too many pillows. he obviously takes advantage of this.

-will not go anywhere without the appropriate feather in his hat. he has one for every occasion, and I mean *every* occasion. he screams like he's naked if he's caught without a feather and will refuse to go anywhere if one is not chosen. he is very particular about them.

-kind of blunt with what he says. it's not really implied that he realizes this, but that means he'll be honest with you even if it comes with some brutal observations. he doesn't quite understand you're not supposed to do that because he was told honesty was part of being polite.

-while his siblings are much heavier than the average human, Jon is lighter due to the void in his chest. he uses this to his advantage as it means he can interact more physically with humans (with their say-so usually)

-his art/writing style is very scribbly and childlike, with lots of swirls and colors

-adores any warm colors (red, yellow, orange, bronze)

-constantly gets into shenanigans, especially with Rabbit and Hatchworth

-Upgrade is like a twin sister to him, whenever she's on a royal tyrant streak she'll always be merciful with Jon in return for some origami figurines

-one of Jon's favorite aesthetics is art-deco, much like how he was designed

-Jon's favorite era is the 1920's-50's, as he adores the fashion, colors, toys, and items from that time. he is also really good at swing dancing, and often likes to play old records just to practice it. a partner is always welcomed ;}

-loves learning about (preferably colorful) animals in books/documentaries made by like natgeo and such. loves trying to impersonate David Attenborough

-clumsy but in an endearing way (clumsy but in a /silly /pos way yk)

-absolutely melts at compliments, especially ones that revolve around the buzzwords "victorian" and "doll"

-when outside, Jon is the type of person (or thing,,,,,?) to make daisy chains/crowns, oogle at butterflies, make wishes on dandelions, and name literally every bird just by its chirp

-adores cartoons and/or anything animated, the only exception being the Marx Brothers' movies in which he idolizes Harpo Marx for being such a cartoony role model

-often finds it difficult to fully express how he feels, this can lead to over/under exaggeration, frustration, getting caught up on words or sentences, or taking conversation breaks to sort out his head

-his favorite story/animation is Alice in Wonderland in all of its iterations. loves playing the Mad Hatter if his siblings ever get around to acting the stories out in their freetime

-often feels like he's a burden because of how high maintenance/jumpy/bubbly he is. because of this he has a hard time opening up about things in fear that he'll just weigh someone down even more

-loves the occasional ponytail or wacky hairstyle. he finds it difficult to do the styles himself with his range and type of motion, but will gladly accept if a human/fellow walter worker is willing to help out

-sucker for good harmonies

-envies Rabbit's art, he likes all the shapely swoops and swirls it has

-definitely the naiive one of the bunch. often worries much more than he should about small things but has learned to tone that down a little in favor of being all upbeat and silly

Headcanons, all about The Spine’s fins(and tail)!

Spine’s fins are sensitive, meant primarily to help cool him down, estimating ambient temperature and make him look bigger as a threat response. They’re connected to large vents on his back, sliding in and out of them, and therefore make him feel cold if they’re extended in cool to chilly weather.

Banging up the fins or somehow misalignment them is uncomfortable to downright painful and he had to be careful with his guitar strap as to not hurt himself when his fins are extended.

They’re also rather sharp, able to tear through fabric and potentially human flesh if he isn’t careful and that they extend suddenly, for this reason most if not all this clothes are made to accommodate his fins extending and retracting.

Rubbing the fins and spinal plating feels good if done properly, almost like a massage, and it helps relieve discomfort, pain and even stress. Only people he trusts dearly can touch his sensitive fins and spinal plating.

His body language(and therefore tail and fin language) changes depending on wether or not he’s in his chassis. In chassis extended fins may simply mean he’s in need of cooling down, getting ready to go on stage, they were uncomfortable retracted or he’s experiencing a strong emotion. In this case look at his face, the way he holds himself and his tail to see how he feels. (Tail wagging can mean happiness, a specially when paired with positive stimming or be stimming in of itself. Sharp and harsh tail movements however show aggravation and annoyance. Tail trying to tuck between his legs or around his leg show fear and anxiety). Out of chassis extended find mean “don’t step on me! I’m down here!” Or “it’s too hot leave me alone please.” He will wiggle his entire body to express a happy wag. If he buzzes his tail he wants to be left alone(in both cases). He will buzz his tail in such was that it hits things to be more audible if at risk of getting stepped on.

Of course!!! (also you didn't word it weirdly, you're fine :D) (Also sorry that this is lateish, I've got some stuff™ on my plate that's proving difficult to juggle)

-He loves to put his head on your head

-He will melt, absolutely melt if you fall asleep in his arms

-The Spine has trouble expressing his emotions on even the best of days, but he will pour his heart out to you if you asked while cuddling with him

-He actually treasures your cuddles

-He treats each of your cuddles like they’re the best thing in his life

-He absolutely loves physical touch (It’s his love language)

-Little hugs, small shoulder touches, and wrapping his arm around your shoulder are the ways he can show his affection while in a more public setting

-In private, though, he clings to you like a sloth

-He would lie on you if he could, but he’s too heavy and doesn’t want to crush you :(

-So, instead, you lie on him while he hugs you

-He likes to listen to your heartbeat

-He sometimes composes small songs to your heartbeat

-He won’t tell anyone, especially you (or Rabbit, because who knows how long she’d tease him about it)

-He’s surprisingly warm. You thought he’d be cold, due to his metal skin, but his Blue Matter core keeps him quite warm

-His palms are made of rubber and they’re ticklish, making it really fun to trace his palms and listen to him try to keep his giggles in

-He absolutely loves it when you curl into him when you two are cuddling

-He’s the big spoon more often than not (because he likes to curl around you and ‘keep you safe’) but he loves it when you cuddle him from behind, even though you’re shorter than him (this bot is 6’ 5”. You’re not taller than him)
