2 SPHINGES in Mantua: Last Sunday, March 1st, I finally made it to the Mantova Collezioni Antiche [MACA], a lovely little museum in Mantua, Italy, that [rather embarrassingly] I had missed until now. While my objective was to capture the bronze head of Arsinoe [stay tuned for that!], I stumbled upon these two remarkable pieces: A pair of Roman Marble Sphinxes dating to the 1st century BC [with later restorations]. Originally carved from Greek marble, the male sphinx features an entirely modern head added during the Renaissance. Believed these were acquired in Rome by Federico Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, for his antiquities collection at the Palazzo Ducale.
