The Passeroidea superfamily is enormous, so this mid-level clade is included to help us narrow things down! The nine-primaried oscine group is named because these birds have only nine easily visible primary feathers visible on each wing.

BOTD: Puerto Rican Spindalis

"A somewhat small woodland bird that moves rather deliberately as it feeds on fruits and flowers and the occasional insect. Inhabits wide range of woodlands, though generally avoids mangroves. Male is dressed in bright yellows and oranges with a distinctive black-and-white striped head. Female is drab, but note distinctive whitish mustache. Calls include a variety of high-pitched squeaks and short whistles."

January 19, 2019 - Western Spindalis (Spindalis zena)

These birds are found in the Caribbean, in parts of the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, and Mexico. They eat fruit, berries, some leaves and other plant parts, and invertebrates, foraging in trees and shrubs. Breeding from April to August, they build cup-shaped nests from twigs and other plant materials on tree branches. Females incubate clutches of two or three eggs alone.

The Western Spindalis (or formerly: Stripe-headed Tanager) is one of the neatest regional specialities available in Cuba. This adult male was photographed during our recent, and third, tour to Cuba this year!

August 12, 2018 - Jamaican Spindalis (Spindalis nigricephala)

Found only in Jamaica, these spindalises were previously placed in the tanager family. They eat mostly fruits, berries, and nectar, foraging in the canopy in pairs or small groups and frequently joining mixed-species flocks. Breeding between April and July, they build loose cup-shaped nests from grasses and rootlets. Females lay clutches of two to three eggs.
