Thinking about how the fascinating thing about No longer human is how hard it is to form an opinion on Yozo.

On the one hand, he’s hurt many people and seems to leave a trail of destroyed lives wherever he goes. On the other, the story highlights his struggling from a very young age and how this effects his actions. While its an explanations for them, it can’t excuse all those harmed.

Because of this, and various other reasons throughout the novel, its incredibly hard to decide what to think of Yozo. Most people tend to either really hate him or really like him. Either way they don’t usually ignore his actions or his traumas. Sound familiar?

I think this is the exact effect Asagiri intended with Dazai’s character, considering yozo is based off of irl Dazai too. And I think Asagiri has been completely successful in this. A lot of characters in bsd are hard to judge as “good” or “bad”, but out of them Dazai is definitely the one whose achieved exactly this. Even in fanon his character is incredibly morally grey.

I know this is basically stating the obvious, but debates on dazais character make me so much more happy knowing this is probably what Asagiri wants.
