Sam slumped in the back of the Impala, arms wrapped around himself. Everything felt…wrong. He felt like he was shutting down. Everything just seemed to be happening at once. Not only had he been kidnapped and tortured for three days, but both his brother, and even more insanely, his mom had come back from the dead. Well, Mary had anyway, Dean, it turned out, hadn't died after all.

Not that that knowledge had helped Sam in any way when he had needed it the most. He just couldn't seem to shake the feeling of being trapped in that basement, not knowing what had happened to Cas or if he was okay, and certain that Dean had sacrificed himself to defeat Amara. Knowing that it was very likely no one would come for him. At least not before Toni and her bruiser got frustrated and killed him.

But he had been saved, and Dean and Cas were both alive (as well as his mother apparently) and now, for some reason, Sam just didn't know what to think. Maybe he was in shock, but…he just felt numb and adrift.

Cas got into the back of the car a few minutes later, sitting next to Sam.

"Dean is just finishing up with the Men of Letters," the angel told him as he turned to the younger Winchester with a pained look. "I'll heal you now while we're waiting."

Sam nodded tiredly, slumping back against the seats, body aching. He closed his eyes as Cas reached out and began to gently touch the worst of his injuries, fingers brushing across them as the glow of angelic grace warmed Sam's skin, putting flesh back together.

The soft touches felt…almost cathartic at the moment. After three days of suffering nothing more than pain and torture at the hands of his captors, these careful, caring ministrations from his friend nearly brought Sam to tears. As Cas reached up to cup his cheek, healing the rest of his injuries, Sam almost subconsciously leaned into his touch.

Cas seemed to realize he needed some human (or, human-angel) contact at the moment, because even when he had finished healing, he placed his hand on Sam's shoulder, squeezing gently.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Tired. Hungry," Sam sighed.

He felt rather than saw Cas smile since he couldn't find the strength to open his eyes. "Well, we'll make sure you get something to eat once we get back, but why don't you sleep for now?"

Sam nodded, grateful he could sleep safely, and slumped until he was resting against Cas' shoulder. He was out before Dean even got in the car and started driving them home.

Sam stood in the shower for a long time, letting the hot water flow over his skin, washing the dirt of the basement, the feeling of hopelessness, off of him. He had to force himself to get out and only his gnawing hunger forced him from under the hot water.

And Dean was waiting for him with a hot meal, because he was always there taking care of Sam when he needed him most.

And Sam realized in that moment, that with everything that had happened he hadn't really gotten the chance to greet his brother. To welcome him back from the dead. Again.

Dean looked up at him as Sam came into the kitchen with a smile. "Hey, Sammy. Hope sandwiches and soup are okay."

Sam kept going until he could wrap his arms around his brother, a relieved sigh escaping him as he squeezed Dean firmly, like he had been holding it in for a long time.

"Hey," Dean said with a fond chuckle, patting him gently on the back. "You okay, kiddo?"

Sam exhaled again, pressing his face into Dean's shoulder. "I am now," he said quietly, but he still didn't let go. He just needed this tactile reminder that his brother was here with him, alive, breathing. It was never something Sam took for granted given their track record and Sam needed to have his brother as close as possible in that moment, reminding him that he wasn't in that hell he had suffered for three days in that basement, alone and hurt.

Dean huffed and hugged Sam back tightly, squeezing until Sam could barely breathe, but it felt good to know that this wasn't some hallucination. That his brother was really here, solid, and warm, exactly what Sam needed in that moment.

The hug went on way longer than would have normally been considered acceptable between them, but Sam knew Dean wouldn't tease him this time. When they finally pulled away, Sam blinked wetness from his eyes and smiled as Dean reached up and patted his cheek.

"I'm glad you're okay," Dean told him sincerely.

"Yeah, me too," Sam whispered, clearing his throat.

Dean squeezed the back of his neck, and pushed him over to sit at the table. "Now come on, you need to eat something."

Sam obliged, and sat down to the food his brother had made him, feeling warmth flood him with the knowledge that he was finally home.

The call between Dean and Cas at the start of 12x2 is SO ODD yet fascinating to me??? Cas is out there, in the middle of nowhere looking for Sam, and Dean is trying to work through having his dead mom back and not knowing how to talk to her???? Like, he's not well versed in any kind of emotional interaction as it is. How the hell is he supposed to talk to his mother that died when he was FOUR?!?? Dean is opening up about this, telling Cas about what's going on. It's awkward and all there is between him and his mom is uncomfortable silence. He doesn't have Sam there, the emotionally competent brother, to smooth things over.

So Dean tries to talk to his best friend who he's in love with about the situation, maybe fishing for some advice because he has no clue what to do? Which is as funny as it is sad, honestly. It's sweet he tries to talk to Cas about it, shows that he's willing to be vulnerable in this way with him, but I think Dean forgets Cas has never really had a family. Other than him (and Sam), of course. So he doesn't know what to say, and Cas is a little rude and sassy in his response (probably in a I'm the least qualified person to ask about this and you know it kind of way). Cas, in his boundless wisdom, simply says, "Don't make things needlessly complicated as you humans tend to do." AS YOU HUMANS TEND TO DO. He's reminding Dean that he's not human, that he doesn't have a mother!!! I think Cas is lashing out a bit here, but I digress. Dean grimaces as Cas says this, recognizing that he may have messed up a little??? I'm not sure. Cas hangs up right after, and Dean mumbles to himself, "Great, that's helpful." Like, buddy, what did you expect this ancient wavelength of power to know about speaking to your mother.
