Dean Winchester | 4.02
Episode 62: 4.02 Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester
Aah, and episode where Dean doesn’t get any pie, but instead is handed an existential crisis! After wrestling with issues about his belief in angels and then God, he comes to the conclusion that if God is real, then he has to be a jerk, because why would he let all this awful stuff happen to people? And that is a very valid question.
Cas talks him through it in a way that provides zero comfort, and pretty much only makes things worse by confirming that the devil is also real and trying to escape. Also, the angels are gonna be relatively useless to Dean in trying to stop the devil from escaping... >.>
Meanwhile, they’re confronted by literal ghosts from their past driven to torment and kill them in revenge. So, the fun never stops.

Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies?
And even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart: I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence. For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure. And we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us. Every angel is terrifying. And so I hold myself back and swallow the callnote of my dark sobbing. Ah, whom can we ever turn to in our need? Not angels, not humans, and already the knowing animals are aware That we are not really at home in our interpreted world.

4x02 - Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester
(X)
I just realized that the retcon of this scene was even WORSE than we originally thought. Although it’s possible that somebody mentioned it and I missed it. This implies that Anael knew Ruby in season THREE. 🙄🙄🙄
Here’s a little canon for the gruesome twosome from season 4.
Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester
RUBY: Did an angel rescue Dean? SAM: You heard. RUBY: Who hasn't? SAM: We're not 100% sure, but I think so. RUBY: Okay. Bye, Sam. RUBY starts walking away. SAM grabs her arm and turns her back to face him. SAM: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait. What's going on? RUBY: Sam, they're angels. I'm a demon. They're not gonna care if I'm being helpful. They smite first, and then they ask questions later. SAM: What do you know about them? RUBY: Not much. I've never met one, and I don't really want to. All I know is that they scare the holy hell out of me. Watch yourself, Sam. SAM: I'm not scared of angels. RUBY walks away, leaving SAM alone.
🤔🤔🤔🤔
Once again;
I've never met one, and I don't really want to.
Among the many retcons in Supernatural, Gabriel retcon is my favorite. Like, I didn't expect the reveal, but 5x08 explained Trickster's previous motive and behavior surprisingly well? So I was wondering, what's your favorite concepts or ideas that were added later in the show?
Aw heck, that’s an excellent one. There’s a lot of retcons I really enjoy. A personal favorite will always be the existence of angels. Dean had them listed on the Bullcrap List, even after an angel raised him from Hell. He had to essentially reevaluate his entire lifetime of understanding the universe to accommodate the understanding that angels are real.
Not only Dean’s reaction, but Sam’s. Sam had always had faith, and always wanted to believe that Heaven and angels and God were real, and forces for good in the universe to counteract hell and demons and all the evil in the world that they’d spent their lives fighting against. But the reality Sam had to accept was that angels and Heaven might be real, but hoooboy are they dicks. :’D
And heck, didn’t that just open up the universe of the show to everything that’s enabled it to continue on past s4? And best of all, it brought us Cas. :D
Now I’m interested in what other folks consider the best retcon.
