After the incident at the asylum, Kat broke it off with Gavin. (They did stay friends though because no one else knew that ghosts exists) Then after high school, she decided to take a year off before college and try her hand at hunting.

Kat finds herself investigating a few mysterious deaths on a highway in Eastern Illinois, and that’s where she meets Tamara, who recently lost her hunting partner. Kat asks Tamara to show her the ropes, but it’s pretty clear Tamara isn’t interested in a protege, so Kat decides to work on the case on her own. After Kat nearly gets herself killed by the angry spirit haunting the stretch of road, only to be narrowly saved by Tamara, Tamara agrees to a tentative partnership.

Together they find out who the ghost is and why he’s haunting the highway, then salt and burn his bones. Tamara discovers that, at least for the research portion of hunting, Kat comes in handy. Maybe she’ll actually keep her around for a while.
