"Motherhood Disattractions" - Fiction story #1
Introduction. Like i have said in past entries that I wanted to write more. On this site as well in my personal journals. So to begin my adventure of writing and expressing my creative self again I have decided to attempt to write a short story. This is all on the cuff, no planning just writing. Let me know what you think.
All names have been changed to protect identities. :P
The bed is warm. That is all she thinks about, right at this moment before she is driven to wake up way too early. Its not like its freezing outside, this is Houston and there is only one day of actual winter in this part of the country. Though tonight it was cold and is felt good to be in her bed, wrapped between the tiger striped sheets and blankets. This comforting thought is what she holds onto at 4 o'clock in the morning with her phone screams at her a Micheal Jackson song, which allows her to know already who is calling. Yet, the nature of her call and the time at which this call is taken place is extremely uncalled for and really irritating her.
With a sleepy voice and tousled hair she reaches for her phone and answers,
"Franny! Oh my gawd. Tiki just did the funniest thing!!"
'Seriously?' She wonders. Although she appreciates the idea of being apart of her children's lives and having the chance to hear about her grand daughter and what she does on a day to day basis, she doesn't feel its necessary to contact her in the middle of the night for something that could of waited until morning, at least. 'Why did I answer the phone? Its hardly ever a real emergency with Scarlett.' Scarlett, the youngest and most reckless of her children always running off and causing amok in the neighborhood to being arrested at 15 and getting pregnant at 18 after meeting her boyfriend, Jamykel, the 28 year drug dealer and hustler who she is convinced in a pimp. But that is another thought all together.
"Okay, Scarlett. What did she do?"
"Well, we were watching Finding Nemo when she...oh she wants to tell you herself.." Franny listened intently as the phone was shuffled about and finally the soft, child like voice appeared on the other end.
"Frwanmy! Hi!!! I was waptching Finding Nemo and saw the fishies swimming then I took a bath and went swimming too! Just like the fishies, and then I pooped in the water, just like fishies do!"
'Is that's it?' She wondered, 'that's what was so important that it deserved a 4 oclock in the morning phone call?'
"Ohhkayy. Tiki! That is great, I guess? Hey, Tiki? Did you like the gift I got you with the pictures of the pretty fishies?"
She was really happy that she found this book at the bookstore the other day, on sale none the less! She knew she would like it and that fishes were something that interested Tiki and thought she would enjoy it. Franny waited with glee, looking forward to hearing how great of a book it was for her and how much she liked it.
"The book?" Tiki replied.
"Yes, Tiki. The book with the fishies, with the different colors on their bodies? Swimming in the big ocean? Did you like it?"
"Oh, thwat book. Yeah, Its okay. It is boring. So i played my bee vidjeo game instead. Frwanmy, I want some pizza."
A loud roaring laughter was in the background coming from Scarlett. More like a cackling hyena coming from her. Glad to hear that she found this funny, Franny on the other hand didn't like hearing her present wasn't appreciated but what could she do? It is not like she was going to say anything because any wrong thing said to Scarlett could cause her to over react and one of Scarlett's famed disappearing acts would ensue and Tiki would not be around her for a long time. Sometimes Franny wondered if she would miss Tiki more than Scarlett, and the truth is that she probably would. Franny decided to gather some courage and take the chance of earning some respect from her daughter. "Tiki, let me talk to mommy."
The phone seemed to be dropped and forgotten about cause all Franny heard was laughter and talking from Scarlett and Jamykel about some ridiculous idea Jamykel had for them to make some extra money. Shortly afterwards, Franny realized that she was forgotten there on the phone at 4 o'clock in the morning with an anger towards her selfish daughter. As she sits there, wide awake in frustration screaming "Hello!", "Hey! Scarlett!! I'm still on the phone!", "I want to talk to you!". She finally gave up after hearing Scarlett and Jamykel laugh and giggle, while saying some disturbing things in a nature that a mother would not want to hear her daughter talk in, and hung up the phone.
Sitting up in her tiger striped bed, trying to remember that feeling of warmth and relaxation she had a mere ten minutes ago, she looks over at her husband. Watches as his chests rises and falls as he slumbers away in a far away dream land. With a long sigh she whispers to him, "she gets this from your side of the family."
Franny settles into her bed, and turns over to try to make up for lost sleeping time when right before she looses consciousness she hears, "I know."
