jason and reader are childhood sweethearts in this one who haven't seen each other or spoken in years. reader thinks jason is dead, and the fic picks up when they're reunited, but the reunion does not go how either of them would have imagined.

it's got all the good stuff: rival gangs, kidnapping, identity reveals, letters never sent, and so much longing.

never heard of Immortality but yikes. does the game's download page have warnings of sex/rape scenes? or did you find out elsewhere

The steam page has this: “IMMORTALITY contains strong language, violence, blood and gore, as well as nudity, sexual content, and the use of alcohol and drugs. Refer to halfmermaid.co/content-warning for a detailed content warning.”

That website’s warning is the same as that in the game:

Advisory The movies of Marissa Marcel are presented untouched or edited and reflect the values of their times. Viewers are warned that the film footage collected within IMMORTALITY contains subject matter that may be upsetting. The stories are taken from the gothic, thriller and supernatural genres and tackle themes and elements such as:

– Strong curse words – Blasphemy regarding the Catholic faith – Sudden and surprising visual cuts and sound events – Alcohol, cigarette and drug use – Abusive relationships – Nudity, sex – Blood and wounding – Suicide – Sexual assault – Murder (asphyxia, knife and firearm)

So as long as you check the warnings page & can extrapolate from the “Sudden and surprising visual cuts and sound events” to the other things and figure out that sometimes it will be cutting to those other things. Though, maybe it’s just that I have trouble with associations, but I would not have made that connection.

Also, literally none of the people recommending it to me and insisting that I go in blind mentioned any of that.

For the record, I’m not saying it’s not a good game. I looked up more analyses after the first, and have come to the conclusion that it’s a wonderful examination of the nature of humanity, art, stories, connection, how and why we are altered by them, as well as loneliness, celebrity, the culture of cinema in both its positive & sleezier aspects, the extremes we push ourselves to for our passions, and what it means to be alive or find meaning in living. I think the match-cut mechanic is a very creative way of telling a non-chronological story, making each player’s experience unique, and I would even say that it handles those heavier topics tastefully (the major rape scene is a pre-dress rehearsal & is part of the movie’s plot rather than something happening to the actors, so everyone is fully dressed in their street clothes, for example.)

It’s definitely an excellent example of games as art, and probably as close to “art house cinema” as games are ever going to get. I would honestly probably recommend it to people who like non-chronological storytelling, lost media quests, unfiction mysteries, and existential tragedies. And I am very, very glad I did not play it, and am now telling everyone: do not go in blind.

Read the basic content warning and if any of those are risky for you, find a thorough content warning that gives the context for each of them, while remembering the match-cut mechanic could put you into any one of those scenes unexpectedly. If you still think you can handle it, bon voyage, it’s a hell of a trip. Lemme know what it changed about you when you get back.

Me? I can’t deal with randomly clicking into a sex scene, even a very well pantomimed one. I will not be playing it.

platonically, hell yes, i really liked their interactions in the birds of prey comics and would love to see more of it, i think there are a lot of interesting elements to explore. namely, how charlie wanted to have the batgirl mantle but was convinced by babs to change her mind because of the death of the previous batgirl, only for stephanie to show up later when it's revealed her death really didn't happen 😭 but i also think they have a lot in common, like their similar upbringings. i also would love to see them both take on the huntress mantle too at some point...
