The strange case of 90s cartoons. The death of SpongeBob Creator Stephen Hillenburg had me thinking about the cartoons I grew up watching. The kids from the 90s are now in their mid/late twenties. They are now old enough to discuss some of the bizarre cartoons of the time. I’ll try and share some of the oddities and try figuring out how they might have shaped us as we are today. Now, it’d not be right of me if I were to say all cartoons of the time had an edgy take but far too many were. Now, one of the popular cartoons of the time ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ (Pilot) little did you know was nominated for an academy award. Theories suggest ‘Courage’ was a take on how Dogs see the world. We had Ed Edd n Eddy. What was up with that series ? Why were they stuck in a cul de sac? (Dead and in heaven some say. Others believe they were in a mental health facility.)Where were their parents and what was plank all about ? What are jawbreakers ( as someone who’s had my fair share of recreational products I think I know exactly what they are.) Androgynous appearances of characters like ‘HIM’ from the Powerpuff Girls have led to other discussions about gender in cartoons. Now I tried to think of what other cultural phenomena today is as bizarre and popular and I drew to the conclusion that the memes today have become exponentially dark over the years. A part of me believes that this is increasingly the case due to being conditioned to such content at an impressionable age. Cartoons have always been a very creative medium with a lot of freedom for introducing alternate ideas and they continue to be to this day.
