all I'm working on right now is fic so might as well answer the tag from @zorilleerrant on the fic blog lol too tired to tag other people sdlfj;sjf
Pandora Faulkner is enjoying this one last poker game with the guards for the Stargate before the program is shut down for good. Samantha, she knows, is rather resentful of this and is still arguing in vain about the possibilities for scientific discoveries beyond the Gate.
Pandora would rather bid the program a fond farewell, then prolong it’s death.
The men took sometime to warm up to her as an unmarried woman, particularly one of some social status, but she had worked her charms and wormed her way into their good graces. She maintains her place there by splitting her winnings at the end of the night. So far none of them have ever managed to catch her cheating. It helps that she does not, not in a traditional sense. She is simply familiar with the flaws on the backs of the old decks they play with, meaning no hand is ever truly obscured from her. She learns them fast enough that even switching the decks does not hinder her for more than an ante or two.
The faint scraping of metal on metal reaches her ears over the sound of the game. She takes her eyes off her cards to frown at the tarp covered ring that is the centerpiece of the room. The cloth is blowing in a wind that should not exist.
sadlj;faslgkj FUNNY STORY so the reality is I had some REALLY BAD acid reflux while watching a scene where a Goa'uld hopped down a person's throat and was like "that would be a funny and stupid way for someone to avoid being snaked if they gagged and threw up and the stomach acid damaged the Goa'uld's Tender Flesh"
that's why she gags on Amaunet in the fic! even if it's less humorous then originally imagined sfl;gjdf
I had already been noodling the idea of doing a stargate fic at the time, lots of little things that I understand probably have production logistics reasons for happening but that still bothered me, questions characters didn't ask, ooc stuff where the reason is "the writers needed someone to do this for the plot to progress" etc
this got long, more under the cut to save your dash sjdljs;gfdg
after thinking about how someone from Earth NOT in the SGC would even get into space to get snaked, I got attached to the idea of an oc who just stumbled into the SGC super hard and I'm FROM the PNW so I had to double down on them filming here by having Spoons be from here and added a bunch of Extremely PNW stuff going on with her character, little things like her calling Washington DC "DC" while everyone else calls it "Washington"*, talking about the umbrella thing in the Christmas episode, the way she says the planet she got dragged to in the very first chapter felt more like home than Utah did, her learning the language of the Snohomish tribe, all of it is just one big expansion of the joke YOU CAN'T FOOL ME STARGATE, THAT'S NOT A DESERT, THAT'S THE SANDS ON THE BEACHES OF THE SAN JUAN'S I'D KNOW THAT SAND ANYWHERE I GREW UP ON IT dfsgl;jdfgf (I know they filmed in BC, not Wa, BUT they're very close and very similar environment wise and I know the Washington side of things! so she's from there)
I started fleshing out some of her backstory and wrote a little thing about her mom and how complicated their relationship is bc she was a Bad Mom, but sometimes she was a Really Good Mom. That was in the notes app of my phone and I thought "well, I'll just move it to my computer" and then the outline was OPEN and I was like "WELL, I can just make the outline, just work on it a little" 14 hours later my roommate was commenting that I was up early and I was staring down the continuum section of the wiki remembering how WEIRD the movies are
She's shifted around a bit, she was supposed to be an opera singer who had to end her burgeoning career due to the acid reflux who then pivoted to linguistics because she learned languages super well and wanted to know more about them, but I remembered I don't know shit about opera, so it shifted to Broadway/Musicals, which I feel comfortable being Confidently Wrong about sfgjld;kjfg I don't know if I'll ever really get into it, but I did the timeline math and realize she would have been doing that degree and starting her musical theater career in the middle of the AIDS crisis and was like. oh she ABSOLUTELY saw a staggering amount of death with that. Which is why she ended up pivoting to linguistics in the fic!
I think there's a hint of it in the cave sequence when Spoons gets sick and wakes up to a terrified and relieved Sha're, because Sha're would also 100% have Disease Trauma being from Abydos. I also gave her the "almost died of an infection" back story (again, for Mom Trauma Reasons), so it would be totally reasonable for people to assume that's what that was about and it really can be read either way. I kinda like it being a thing people would have to Do The Math On for her, since she doesn't really talk about it
She was originally not going to be a host at all, but someone Amaunet thought was extremely beautiful and preferred to Sha're, having Amaunet die while trying to take over Spoons and freeing both of them then, but ultimately I didn't really like that. there's also hints of a dropped plotline where Amaunet was gambling with maturing primta to try and find one who was an ashrak based on complicated worldbuilding in my head, but the more I looked at the actual SG1 timeline, the more it fell apart. I'm really happy with what I landed on though! I liked her not really knowing why she got picked and no one really knowing why Amaunet was trying to jump into Spoons! The idea in my head is she was trying to get into Spoons to see what the ashrak had done to see if she could undo it before they had to abandon ship
But yeah! Spoons, like most of my ocs, started as a "you know what would be funny?" and then grew from there
*Fun fact: they almost called the state "Columbia" to try and avoid confusion with the capital and then didn't, I wish we lived in that timeline, if people tell you that it got rejected for being too confusing with "District of Columbia" they are LYING, the dude in favor of Washington was arguing that Columbia would ALSO be confusing so they should stick with Washington even though people were already pointing out Washington was going to confuse people, why don't we call in Columbia instead (I mean we could have called it any of the names it already had from the people who were already living here, but that's a different discussion #landback)

Summary:
Given the option, Spoons rolls out of bed on Christmas at the crack of noon.
She's always slept late and the ability to do so without consequences on a holiday is one of her favorite parts of them.Jack, however, has been conditioned by years of the military to wake up early all the time and appears to think that they should get the morning started sooner rather than later. He does let her finish her first cup of coffee before bundling her half-asleep near-corpse into the truck and driving over to the Jackson's where he promises more coffee will be waiting.
"Daniel lives there, honey. There will be a fresh pot."

Summary:
Conversation around the dinner table is a little awkward and a little stilted. It's clear that the three of them don't have much common ground together. Jack brings up baseball, which causes Spoons to talk about her home team. Sara talks about Charlie's games. Jack swallows hard. Sara is about to change the subject when he volunteers a story about coaching the little league. It's not easy, or simple, but Sara feels something in her relax.
Spoons takes a cab to a hotel, ridiculously expensive, but she doesn't blink at the price. She hugs both Jack and Sara before she leaves. Sara gives her their number and tell her to call if she needs anything.
She heads to their bedroom with Jack. He notices the half-packed suitcase, but doesn't say anything. She pulls him into a tight hug. "We're okay."
For Bad: Is there anyone who had an undeniable negative impact on your OC’s life? How did your OC deal with that change? Have they been able to move on?
Who hurt Spoons?
by far the person who has had the absolute worst impact on Spoons life is their mom. everything about their relationship with their mom is so fraught and so unresolved.
nancy faulkner could not stand even a little bit how weird and odd her child was and how hard it was to get spoons to fall in line and she especially could not stand how well Spoons connected to robert, a man who should, by rights, hate spoons as evidence of infidelity. she took spoons in the divorce because she didn't want robert to have her and wanted him to suffer and she figured spoons was young enough for it to be fine. and then her next husband hated kids, so nancy sent her to a boarding school because hey, she'll be taken care of there and just genuinely did not think about spoons again until she got a call from the principal that spoons got into a fight with an older boy.
and then nancy came to pick her up because she needed to and she saw her small, angry, bruised daughter and learns the spoons did not pick a fight with a boy, she fought off a boy and for once in her life, she was a really good mom. she pulled spoons out of school, got her self defense lessons and told spoons "no one touches you without your permission ever again," and for a few months there, was present in her daughters life. she showed up and got to know her and taught her the skills she had, like how to put on makeup and things weren't perfect, but it was better.
the third husband was not much of an improvement on the second and nancy backslid and ignored that spoons needed medical attention because she was on her honeymoon and didn't want to deal with it and then spoons almost died! and spoons just. never saw her again. she has no idea what happened to her mom.
she woke up in the hospital and her dad was there and she just. never got a resolution. never got to talk to her mother and find out why she did what she did for any of it. which spoons ended up just kinda burying for a very long time until she looked in the mirror while possessed by a Goa'uld and she saw her mother.
she dyed her hair blue pretty soon after
honestly, the worst part about it for spoons is that her mom was better for a little while. it all would have been easier to swallow if she had just stayed awful.
rewriting the intro to spoons 2: electric boogaloo and I love playing with my ocs backstories like dolls. okay, so most of my "spoons in the movie" aus start with the premise that spoons and daniel know each other fairly well and she follows him into the project because no one can really tell her "no" and usually it's like in ssak where they're very technically foster siblings and daniel feels weird about it and spoons went "it's free brother" and that disconnect causes the both of them a lot of pain and anguish. it's fun for me.
BUT, I think it would be fun for in THIS au for them to be actual for-real foster siblings who honestly very often just drop the "foster."
it goes like this: Nancy Faulkner, in an attempt to distract herself from how hard it is for her to connect with her child, reads about the tragic deaths of Melburn and Claire Jackson and in a move that is one part compassion and five parts vanity decides to foster their now orphaned son. she really only expects it to take a few months for the boy's grandfather to show up and take custody, so whats the harm?
Daniel is 8 and grieving and Spoons is four and isn't talking, but she brings him her stuffed t-rex and shows him all the fun places to hide and if this is where he's going to be staying until Nick comes and gets him, there could be worse places.
a few months turns into a few years and then, all of a sudden, Nick checks himself into a facility in Oregon, unable to cope with being unable to convince himself that what he saw in in that temple never happened. Robert Faulkner drives Daniel down to Oregon every weekend, often with Spoons in tow as his little shadow. as Daniel gets older he getting a little sick of her always being there, but never during these visits. high school starts and he barrels his way through it, eager to get to college and continue his parents work. he'd've gone into archeology anyway, he thinks. it's in his blood. but wanting to make his parents proud adds fuel to the flame.
spoons doesn't barrel through school, though it's clear she could. nancy and robert, in perfect agreement for once, want spoons to spend time focusing on learning how to talk to people who aren't her family. she's resentful at first, having thought that when she was in high school she would finally have the freedom to race through the academics that bore her and move on to more complex, more exciting things. and then she discovers theater, which is tricky and mesmerizing and compelling and hard in a way she doesn't expect. she flies through and lights up and nothing is built for her quite like the stage.
it's wonderful and bittersweet to watch his baby sister finally break out of being his shadow.
spoons double majors in college (as she always does); linguistics and theater. she doesn't take a break to go try and make it as an actor, throwing herself immediately into grad school and post-grad. daniel rolls his eyes when they chose to do their program at the university where he works, but he can't deny the linguistics program is top-notch. she tells him the stage isn't going anywhere and right now, she wants to see how high she can get her language count.
very high, as it turns out.
and then, suddenly, or perhaps slowly, Daniel begins to understand is grandfather more and more. the dates don't line up, the methods are wrong, nothing makes sense about the timing of the great pyramids. he starts burning up goodwill at the university faster than he can process and before he knows it, the most respected academics in his field are pouring out of his lecture, leaving behind only his sister and the dean, the former with a sympathetic expression, the latter full of pity
