Was listening to my trans music on Spotify and it gave me a song about being transmasc and Jewish.

As a Jewish person who is also probably transmasculine in some way, I feel very seen. The “being watched by the Spotify algorithm” kind of seen.

Also, I love how I have both my Trans blog and my Jewish blog, which both would have fit with this post, but instead I go with my Everything blog (Everything being primarily Minecraft).

I didn’t listen to much Spotify this year so my wrapped is a bit of a mixed bag of liked songs and random songs I searched up. Some artists I listen to more frequently. And of course the algorithm push of a certain artist when I just let it play still taints my wrapped with someone I don’t actually listen to coughtaylorcough

my spotify wrapped was messed up on january 4th, 2021 when i discovered the masterpiece that is arabella that i will never shut up about

There are many songs I refuse to shut up about, but the Nathan Hale Trilogy with the Finale sped up to 1.5 takes the cake in terms of frequency of recommendations

I could have added the soundtrack of Mulan, videogame parody songs, devil trigger and Bury the light on repeat, and the mandalorian theme. But it was already loaded. (BTW When I say Dio, I mean Ronnie James Dio, not the vampire. Although the vampire would be good too)

And as I said yesterday, the Spotify algorithm really fucked my wrapped stats, bc not only do I have songs I don't even remember ever hearing in my life in my top 20 (?????? how), but I also ended up with an artist I don't listen to in my top 5 (cry with me). I think this happened bc when I let my Spotify play their "random" songs after an album, they always push this artist's songs. So they're saying that qualified them for 5th place. I literally cannot sing along to these songs, I can't name them.. I don't even know them UGHHHHHH anyways

I don't listen to TS and I have no clue how they're saying she's top 5. This is rigged. It has to be rigged!

The Spotify algorithm is honestly a thing. I don’t know how else to describe it. Morbid curiosity has me checking out the “curated” playlists at least once a week and I think that it’s really good at some things and objectively terrible at other, equally important things.

And the clearest example of this is the “Feel Good Happy Mix” it gives me.

Because it’s really good at finding bright, high tempo, melodic songs.

And really bad at recognizing that a lot of millennial music pairs said bright sounding music with lyrics about existential angst, playing with nihilism, stubborn survival, and gritted-teeth hope in the face of despair.

While not depressing, certainly optimistic despite everything, and definitely music I love to listen to to feel better, I still wouldn’t call it “feel good” or “happy.”
