Aucuba japonica, Garryaceae
Known as Spotted laurel in the UK, this shrub native to East Asia does very well near water and can grow quite large, brightening up a shady spot with its peculiarly variegated leaves, as depicted here, by the Polmadie Burn in Glasgow.
Another of those plants I’ve observed since I’ve had eyes to see!In my grandparents’ courtyard, in northern Italy, three tall old plants stood on the north-facing wall and regularly produced large quantities of red berries. My granny often used the leaves in ornamental arrangements together with flowers from the garden and used to root cuttings in simple water.
