Every semester, the houses have a themed “formal” party called either Winter or Spring Weekend. Our theme was “Pollination: Bees, Flowers, and Gardens” (bees have become something of an unofficial mascot here at Chapin house, hence BEEyoncé looking the way she does). Whatever the theme, Spring Weekend is a great excuse to dance, take selfies, and wear what makes you feel great.
Spring Weekend!!
Spring Weekend in at the start of April, where each house hosts a more formal party for the house members and guests they invite. Of course, it’s incredibly ironic that Spring Weekend is happening considering it was snowing today. That’s New England weather for you! Even so, we were feeling the spring spirit. Some people dress up and some people don’t, it’s a really casual and fun party for everyone! Our house also had some ice cream, cookies, Swedish fish, and more! There was no Smith To-Do this weekend because of Spring Weekend, so no Smith To-Do post from me ;) Below are some pictures from the event!
Usually, an a capella group comes and sings at houses! This year, we had the Smithereens singing. Here is a short video!
Good music, good company, good ice cream. What else can I ask for?

Spring Weekend 2023
Happy first day of April! Believe it or not, graduation is now 50 days away! Earlier today, we had our Spring Weekend celebration which is an annual house event/party that is held in late March or early April. You can read about my last year's Spring Weekend at the respective link.
This year the main activity was making flower crowns. To do so, we essentially just attached flowers and other plant materials to a round of wire using floral tape. Floral tape is pretty cool as it doesn’t become sticky until it is stretched. I didn’t really have the patience or artistic vision to make a full crown, but I did add a few purple flowers and a blue ribbon to my wireframe.
The next main activity was painting small canvases to spell out Washburn. Again, as I’m not much of an artist, I just hung out while others painted. Besides, I had to leave the event a bit early to film a video for my Design Clinic project.
In addition to the crafting activities, we had a lovely spread of fruit, cheese, charcuterie, and crackers. We also had mocktails containing grapefruit juice, lemonade, and seltzer.

Spring Weekend 2022
Each year in late March / early April, we have Spring Weekend during which each house’s house council organizes a fun house party. We also hold Halloween and Winter Weekend parties in the fall semester. To read more about the fall 2021 Washburn Halloween party, click here. This year I actually attended two Spring Weekend parties which is pretty out of character for me. The first one I attended was on Friday night at Cushing House. Cushing’s Spring Weekend was essentially just a performance by the Smith K-Pop Dance Crew (SKDC). The other Spring Weekend party I attended was at my own house (Washburn). This year we went all out with the decorations. We didn't have a specific named theme, but our decorations were mostly spring-themed. At tea last week we made our very own pinatas by papier-mâchéing over balloons. As for food and drinks, we had pie from the Florence Pie Bar, sparkling cider, and seltzer. We also had a sparkly backdrop for photos. In Washburn, we have a mascot named safety man and placed a variation of pin the tail on the donkey called pin the hand on safety man. We also had Groove A Cappella perform three songs. When Groove wasn’t performing, we had music playing and essentially had a dance party. The final event of the party was breaking the pinatas with a rolling pin.
