Thoughts on Equius and Vriska
It's been a long time coming.
Well not like a *long* long time but a good little while so here it is. I'm trying to clear out my drafts before I start with act 6 /Cascade/Doc Scratch exposition dump stuff. Anyway, thoughts on these two blue bloods.
Obviously both of them have done some pretty crappy stuff. I'm not gonna list all of it but besides all the bad stuff they did, both of them are major assholes to their friends, and are largely selfish in their motivations. However, in this last quarter-ish of Act 5 Act 2, both of them are given some more redeemable qualities. And then the both kick the bucket right after but that's not important.
Equius I feel like a lot of his redeemable qualities come from his relationship with Nepeta. Around his morail, Equius is more sincere, empathetic, and generally just a nicer dude all around. Also he does horse puns, and it's so silly. But the fact that he's been hiding the horse puns this whole time tells that at least some of his bad attitude is a facade. He's been so close to a 'hemospectrum doesn't actually matter' epiphany this whole time and the fact he was willing to fight Gamzee in the end says a lot.
Vriska I feel like I got a lot more context for Vriska, and her whole conversation with John really did make me think about her differently. The trolls are alien. They were raised differently than the kids, and ultimately the reader. What is considered normal in their society is macabre and brutish from a human perspective. I feel like it especially explains her deal with Tavros, because while he didn't deserve to die, in Vriska's mind, she had to.
But this is more of a spring-board to talk about something I *really* wanted to talk about, which was a line from Vriska in her conversation with John before she dies. I'm not gonna go and look it up, but it's something to the effect of "Spurb knows it's being played by kids on the cusp of maturity, the game is designed with that in mind". And I think that in very true. It's like an experiment, almost. To run a perfect experiment, all outside factors need to be eliminated, and only one thing, the thing you're testing, can change. By destroying the world it's players originate from, Spurb creates the perfect environment for the players to decide where they want to proceed. If they win, it gives them a blank slate to shape however they want.
I don't entirely agree with Vriska in this situation though, because according to her, giving into their violent nature was the way for the trolls to make the most of their session, by killing each other so they all could god-tier. While yes, I think that killing each other would be a way to have everyone godtier quickly, I don't know how effective that method would be when it would be when it came time to defeat the black king. It seems like that took serious amounts of collaboration from all of them, which likely would not have worked as well if the red vs blue mentality stuck. I think that ultimately, Spurb is about making everyone more open to collaboration, putting them all on the same level and encouraging them to work together. It's why tasks, like making the genesis frog, are split up between players, meaning on person couldn't do all the work themselves. Spurb, in my mind, is meant to bring people together, like any good game should.
Zhekia Pancur (Zeh-Key-ah Pan-Kuh-ur)
He/They, 17 (October 12th), Demiromantic/Ace
Honest, Observant, Determined, Messy, Abrupt, Strong-willed
Zhekia is the middle sibling in the Pancur family and the one who gets into the most trouble. Zhekia is honest to a fault, he can come off very blunt and rude. Zhekia is nice but he won't try and pretend to like people. He gets frustrated with Galile a lot because of this because he can see that everyone is being fake to him and he just wants his older brother to have actual friends. Zhekia doesn't follow any social norms that he doesn't like and tends to just do whatever with no regard to others.
Zhekia is kinda feral and tends to be out of the house the most out of the three, he spends time with Lupa and the two of them hunt. He's got a hard time trying to talk with others and finds it easier to talk through body language. Zhekia looks up to Galile a lot and it makes him upset anytime Galile blows him off to hang out with his friends.
Zhekia did his and Murdock's piercings under the supervision of Galile when he was 12.
