Upon entering the main exhibit area at @riversidereptilesec , to your right will be the tortoise habitats. These are open areas for them to roam, with low walls for easy viewing. Pictured here is a Sulcata Tortoise who was taking his lunch to-go so he could come check me out! 😅 🥗 🚗 They are said to be quite friendly and social with humans and have grown in popularity as pets in the United States. **Be sure to do some research before considering a pet of your own! They can get big - generally growing to over 100lbs, ranking them as the 3rd largest tortoise in the world, and the largest mainland tortoise of Africa. They also live up to 70 years and they eat A LOT of veggies! 70 years worth of veggies?! 😳 “Sulcata” is Latin for “furrow” which describes the lines or grooves you see between each scute on a Sulcata Tortoise’s carapace. Those furrows and the upturned marginal scutes at the edge of the shell aid in identifying the species.
