For your first question; honestly I think either the guy wouldn't leave 4546b (the planet subnautica takes place on), or if they did leave that they would return. Be the end of there journey, they would have made a life there with spyke (and others), they wouldn't just leave and never return. (Even if they wanted to (and take spyke) spyke wouldn't fit in the space ship)

As for your second question; it's a mix. Spyke is very big, very spikey, and very poisonous. Making him really hard to be prayed upon.
